MARTIN, Tenn. - Martin police are investigating an altercation in which a high school basketball player says his coach assaulted him during a game.
Javier Gordon's mom, Sonya Daniels, told WPSD Local 6 she was in the stands Tuesday night when, in the third quarter, she saw coach J.B. Suiter grab her son's jersey and then jerk his face.?She was told that night that the assistant principal would handle the situation and when she couldn't?talk to the superintendent the next day, she?did talk with the assistant principal.?Then she went to the police.
"I think he should have better control of himself as a coach, as a leader, and as an adult," she said. She added that her son has complained about the coach's "aggressive tactics" before.
Superintendent Randy Frazier said they take all complaints like this seriously and?will act appropriately when the police wrap up their investigation. He says the incident is "unfortunate" because it takes the attention off the players and their hard work.
"You get complaints at time," he said.?"We've never had any physical accusations of the coach that he grabbed or?hit or pushed or shoved a child."
Both Gordon and Suiter were suspended for the game Friday night. Police say they're not sure if their investigation will be complete by the time of the next game on Monday.
