Woman, 22, a 'person of interest' in Vegas shooting

(Reuters) - Police identified a 22-year-old woman on Tuesday as a "person of interest" in the slaying of an aspiring rapper who was shot and killed while driving his Maserati on the Las Vegas strip and for the deaths of two more people in a fiery crash that ensued.

Las Vegas police said Tineesha Lashun Howard was riding in a black Range Rover with prime suspect Ammar Harris when he opened fire on the Maserati being driven by 27-year-old Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr. before dawn on Thursday.

Cherry, who performed under the name "Kenny Clutch," was mortally wounded and his silver sports car veered out of control, colliding with a taxicab in an intersection at the heart of the strip, near several casino resort hotels.

Harris, 26, has been the subject of a multistate manhunt since the incident, and police say he has a long criminal history that includes arrests for robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping and soliciting prostitution.

Police believe Harris is "involved in the sex trade," said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Officer Bill Cassell.

Harris is described as having several tattoos, including a large black-eyed owl on his neck and small heart on his upper right cheek.

Police officials described Howard as a "missing and possibly endangered individual" from the Miami area.

"She's listed as a missing person," Cassell said. "How she went missing is part of the Miami Police Department's investigation."

Several photos released by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department showed Howard and Harris together in each others' arms. In one of them they are seen riding in a sport utility vehicle, possibly the Range Rover.

The Range Rover used in the shooting, which bore paper dealer plates, has been impounded by police, but officials have not said where they found the luxury sport utility vehicle. No weapons were recovered from inside.

Earlier on Tuesday, Las Vegas taxicab companies pledged $35,000 toward a reward fund for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Harris.

Authorities say the dramatic shooting in a busy intersection of the desert resort city may have stemmed from a verbal altercation in the valet area of the Aria Resort and Casino a few blocks away on the Strip.

The incident took place less than a mile from where rapper Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in September 1996 while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight after the two men had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

Shakur, 25, was hit by gunfire from at least one assailant in a Cadillac while sitting in Knight's car at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and died six days later at a hospital. His murder remains unsolved.

Zuckerberg, Gates tout programming in video

When Hadi and Ali Partovi immigrated to America from Iran in 1984, they slept in the same cramped bedroom as their parents, who exhausted their life savings on the teenage boys' education.

Nearly 30 years later, the twin brothers are firmly planted in the tech industry's elite circles, after selling companies to Microsoft and News Corp's MySpace, and tapping the rare connections to invest early on in Facebook, Dropbox and Zappos.

Hadi Partovi says the arc of his own successful rise in the tech world was shaped by an early interest in computers and a formal education in writing software, or coding, which enabled that spark to flourish into a career.

Along the way, the twins made influential friends.

Bill Gates, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey ? three people who became billionaire tech industry luminaries thanks to their computer programming abilities ? appear in a new video released Tuesday by the Partovi brothers as part of their new computer science-education nonprofit, Code.org.

The goal of the online video campaign is to encourage parents to demand more schools to teach computer programming ? a potentially lucrative skill that "equalizes opportunity" but is only available to a fraction of U.S. high school students, Hadi Partovi said.

"Computer programming, right now, is the best embodiment of the American Dream," Partovi said. "The American Dream is to be the next Mark Zuckerberg."

"The tragedy is the skills it takes are not hard to learn, but only 10 percent of schools offer (computer science) courses, and these are usually the privileged schools."

After graduating with computer science degrees from Harvard in 1994, the Partovi brothers founded LinkExchange and sold it to Microsoft in 1998 for $250 million. Hadi helped co-found Tellme Networks, a telephony company, while Ali went on to found iLike, a music service that became one of the first apps to integrate with Facebook.

A new digital divide
The Partovis' campaign comes at a time tech executives warn of a new digital divide emerging between job-seekers who possess programming skills and those who do not. They also point to statistics showing that while coding jobs are among some of the most well-paid, especially in Silicon Valley, there remains a dearth of computer engineers, who are recruited aggressively by companies like Google and Facebook.

But there have also been strong signs recently that government officials are increasingly raising the issue of technical education, beginning at the secondary level.

In his State of the Union speech this month, President Barack Obama vowed to redesign U.S. high schools to meet "the demands of a high-tech economy," while New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg this week introduced a new computer programming pilot program for 20 schools.

Hadi Partovi, who financed the video with his brother, lined up endorsements from Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and American Federation of Teachers union leader Randi Weingarten, although they did not appear on camera. The 10-minute video was directed by Lesley Chilcott, the producer behind the documentaries "An Inconvenient Truth" and "Waiting for Superman."

Partovi said he hoped to eventually raise money to fund programming courses in low-income school districts and perhaps even advocate for certain policy reforms that champion computer science education. In California, he noted for example, computer science courses are not counted toward high school graduation requirements.

"We owe our success in business to having learned to code," Hadi Partovi said.

Although the video mostly contains interviews with tech entrepreneurs and has familiar startup scenes ? like shots of young employees skateboarding inside startup offices ? there are some unexpected appearances by pop celebrities, including Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh and Will.i.am, a part-time startup investor himself.

"Great coders are today's rock stars," the music producer, sitting in his recording studio, says into the camera.

But what is considered a truism in Silicon Valley may not be apparent elsewhere, Hadi Partovi said.

"Middle America doesn't realize it's an issue," he said. "We can't solve the problem until we realize it exists."

Oscars' strong showing boosts other ABC shows, too

NEW YORK (AP) ? The 40.4 million people who watched the Oscars this year boosted some other ABC shows, too.

Jimmy Kimmel's post-Oscars talk show got its biggest audience in the eight years he's been doing it, the Nielsen Co. said. About 5.8 million people tuned in for the show, which didn't begin until after midnight on the East Coast. Kimmel's earlier time slot on weeknights has also increased his visibility.

It was Kimmel's second-biggest audience ever, behind only a post-Super Bowl program in 2006.

Similarly, the Oscars-focused edition of "Good Morning America" on Monday reached 6.13 million viewers, above the show's season average of 5.27 million. NBC's "Today" show on Monday had 4.71 million viewers. ABC said it checked back to 2004 and couldn't find a larger margin of victory over "Today." Given the longtime dominance of "Today" up until last year, it's a good bet "Good Morning America" hasn't won by that much since the early 1990s.

NBC's most-watched show on Sunday night had less than a tenth of the "Oscars" audience, so it could be considered an achievement that "Today" got that close the next morning.

"Good Morning America" reached 6.12 million viewers last Wednesday, on co-host Robin Roberts' return to work after being out since last summer with a blood and bone marrow disease.

The Oscars had its biggest audience in three years.

When the month is over, CBS said it will have beaten all the other networks in the 18-to-49-year-old demographic that many advertisers seek for the first February since 1998. Among all viewers, CBS has had the top 31 most popular scripted programs in February.

On the other side, NBC's mid-winter slide continued. For the second time in six weeks, the network had a smaller prime-time viewership than the Spanish-language network Univision. Only one NBC show, "Chicago Fire," had a bigger audience than Univision's music awards show "Premio Lo Nuestro."

For the week in prime time, ABC averaged 11.3 million viewers (6.9 rating, 11 share). CBS was second with 9.6 million viewers (6.1, 10), Fox had 6.6 million (3.9, 6), NBC had 3.8 million (2.5, 4), the CW had 1.5 million (1.0, 2) and ION Television had 1.2 million (0.8, 1).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision had a 4 million viewer average (2.1, 3), Telemundo had 1.3 million (0.7, 1), UniMas had 590,000 (0.3, 1), Estrella had 190,000 and Azteca 110,000 (both 0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.4 million viewers (6.3, 11). ABC's "World News" was second with 8.4 million (5.6, 11) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7.4 million viewers (4.9, 9).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Feb. 18-24, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "The Oscars," ABC, 40.38 million; "Oscars Red Carpet Live" (Sunday, 8 p.m.), ABC, 25.53 million; "NCIS," CBS, 21.08 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 17.62 million; "Oscars Red Carpet Live" (Sunday, 7:30 p.m.), ABC, 16.5 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 16.27 million; "American Idol" (Wednesday), Fox, 14.37 million; "Person of Interest," CBS, 14.23 million; "American Idol" (Thursday), Fox, 13.66 million; "Two and a Half Men," CBS, 13.41 million.

Best of the Best' in the Massage World

?

Fitness and beauty have continued to grow as an industry, and they are becoming one of the most popular sectors making up the world of business in the 21st Century.

One of the highest popularity areas when it comes to the beloved ?fitness and beauty? regime is in the form of franchises. And, one reason is, a company called BAM with franchises that are making a huge brand ?pawprint? with their exciting fitness innovation called,Xist fit Xist Fitness; not to mention in the beauty sector involving; The TAN Company and Spray La Vie; and a duo that is the ?best of the best? in the massage world, called MassageLuXe and FaceLuXe. These happen to be a ?team? of franchises that are not only improving beauty and health, but they are also creating longer, healthier, more pain-free lives for their clients.

In 2013, the BAM franchises continue to grow. With more and more medical and health professionals coming out with their ideas for preventative health, by using fitness and massage, the growth is even more rapid. Insurance companies have also started to offer a variety of incentives hoping that individuals will take better care of themselves. With this extra support, the beauty and fitness industry will continue to make a positive impact on peoples? lives. From fighting obesity to attempting to halt the progress of aging, Xist Fitness, as well as the myriad of BAM Franchises, are helping people work to make their lives longer, and find some kind of relaxation that comes from the ?LuXe? names.

An America that has become more health-conscious also comes from the fact that more and more are turning toward the World Wide Web in order to get fit, learn new information, find out data from the medical professionals out there, and join up with fitness centers so they can reduce all that excess weight that?s causing them such pain and agony. And when they found out about Xist Fitness, and realized that it is a franchise in the making that not only allows them a chance to lose the weight but also to do so in an encouraging environment, unlike many fitness centers, the health-conscious factor soared.

For fitness alone, industry profits are estimated to grow ?5.3% per year for the next five years and revenues will hit $29.1 billion by 2016.? (source: IBISWorld.) Therefore, the conclusion is that the trend for this country is the same as the trend for BAM franchises; we wish to be a part of a growing trend that will provide each and every one of us with a more healthy lifestyle.

For those who are unaware, obesity became a tremendous problem over the past decade, with over seventy percent of American adults being overweight. With this trend comes the increase in so many health issues it?s almost impossible to name them all; diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure are the significant leaders. But the BAM Franchises ? especially Xist Fitness ? are among the biggest advocates for transforming these numbers into something livable. (0% could happen if an Xist Fitness center ?popped up? in every neck of the woods.) They are perfectly positioned, with their innovative ideas, to help individuals with this problem and give them the opportunity to stay in shape for the long haul.

Be very clear, franchises are no longer contained to the world of convenience stores and fast food joints. In fact, with the BAM presence, the world of fast food is decreasing while the healthy one is becoming stronger and stronger ? which is exactly the trend we want our children to follow so that these health issues can become a thing of the past.

It is also a huge benefit that franchisers are creating jobs for almost twenty million needy Americans. And these are not just jobs that provide cash and benefits; these are jobs that offer the worker an immense amount of pride in what they do for a living.

So, there?s only one question left to be asked: Is franchising right for you? BAM is an excellent way to bring your A-Game to the world!

Bad sleep 'dramatically' alters body

A run of poor sleep can have a potentially profound effect on the internal workings of the human body, say UK researchers.

The activity of hundreds of genes was altered when people's sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week.

Writing in the journal PNAS, the researchers said the results helped explain how poor sleep damaged health.

Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and poor brain function have all been linked to substandard sleep.

What missing hours in bed actually does to alter health, however, is unknown.

So researchers at the University of Surrey analysed the blood of 26 people after they had had plenty of sleep, up to 10 hours each night for a week, and compared the results with samples after a week of fewer than six hours a night.

More than 700 genes were altered by the shift. Each contains the instructions for building a protein, so those that became more active produced more proteins - changing the chemistry of the body.

Meanwhile the natural body clock was disturbed - some genes naturally wax and wane in activity through the day, but this effect was dulled by sleep deprivation.

Prof Colin Smith, from the University of Surrey, told the BBC: "There was quite a dramatic change in activity in many different kinds of genes."

Areas such as the immune system and how the body responds to damage and stress were affected.

Prof Smith added: "Clearly sleep is critical to rebuilding the body and maintaining a functional state, all kinds of damage appear to occur - hinting at what may lead to ill health.

"If we can't actually replenish and replace new cells, then that's going to lead to degenerative diseases."

He said many people may be even more sleep deprived in their daily lives than those in the study - suggesting these changes may be common.

Dr Akhilesh Reddy, a specialist in the body clock at the University of Cambridge, said the study was "interesting".

He said the key findings were the effects on inflammation and the immune system as it was possible to see a link between those effects and health problems such as diabetes.

The findings also tie into research attempting to do away with sleep, such as by finding a drug that could eliminate the effects of sleep deprivation.

Dr Reddy said: "We don't know what the switch is that causes all these changes, but theoretically if you could switch it on or off, you might be able to get away without sleep.

"But my feeling is that sleep is fundamentally important to regenerating all cells."

Kyle Larson has no hesitation about racing again

(AP) ? Kyle Larson won't have a second thought about getting back in a race car following his frightening crash at Daytona International Speedway.

More than two dozen fans were injured Saturday when Larson's car sailed into the fence on the final lap of the Nationwide Series race and debris ? including a tire ? flew into the grandstands. Larson was uninjured, but many fans wondered if the severity of the accident would shake the nerves of the 20-year-old NASCAR rookie.

Not a chance.

"I've been in some really bad wrecks, I'm sure I'll have more throughout my career," Larson told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday. "I know crashing is part of the risk we take being race car drivers. It happens. I'm not emotionally (upset), that wreck doesn't make me nervous."

Larson, a development driver for Chip Ganassi Racing who has been praised as the next big superstar by the likes of Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne, will be back in the Nationwide car this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. He is also scheduled to run a USAC race Friday night at Canyon Speedway Park.

After pulling out of a non-winged race Saturday night in Ocala, Fla., after the wreck at Daytona ? "I wanted to be respectful to the fans who were still in the hospital. I didn't think it would be right to go have fun while they were hurting," he said ? Larson is eager to get back in the car.

The Daytona wreck, after all, wasn't even the worst of his career. Although it looked awful, and the front-end of Larson's car was sheared off, his engine was wedged in a hole in the fence ? Larson believes his accident in a midget car at Eldora Speedway last September was worse: His car flipped after hitting the wall and was hit broadside by another car.

"Off the top of my head, that wreck at Eldora hurt more and was just as scary. I almost had a car come in my cockpit," Larson said.

Still, last Saturday's wreck, in Larson's debut Nationwide Series race, was the first time his car has ripped a fence and disintegrated so badly. He said he only thought his car had gone upside down, and he wasn't aware he'd hit the fence until he saw the wreckage.

"It happened so fast, I kind of thought I'd gone upside down so I was not expecting to see half my car gone," Larson said. "I wasn't expecting to see my engine caught up in the fence. So I was definitely in some shock when I got out of the car and saw it torn apart. I've never had an accident like that where I'd got caught up in the fence, so that was a little different. Kind of a freak deal."

Among the issues NASCAR is researching from Saturday's crash is why Larson's car disintegrated the way it did when it hit the fence.

Seven people with crash-related injuries remained hospitalized in Daytona Beach in stable condition, Halifax Health spokesman Byron Cogdell said Tuesday morning. Also Tuesday, an Orlando law firm said three fans injured in the accident have retained its services.

Larson, meanwhile, is a little disappointed the Nationwide accident and an incident with C.E. Falk III in the "Battle at the Beach" race are the two lasting memories of his Daytona debut.

Larson opened Speedweeks with a second-place finish in the ARCA race, his first ever event at Daytona. But the buzz around him turned negative two days later when he spun Falk on the final lap to win the Whelen All-American Series Late Model race.

Larson was criticized for the move on Twitter by several top-name Sprint Cup Series drivers, and fans also lashed out at the young driver. He said Tuesday he has mixed feelings about the backlash.

"I got in the back of him and spun him coming to the checkers, which was not very nice, and I got a lot of criticism for that and people lost a lot of respect for me for that," Larson said. "I care because people who are huge backers of me and said I'm the greatest driver ever, now one incident and all of a sudden I am the worst race car driver ever. That's not how I race. But I watched videos, a little bit of races at Bowman-Gray, to get prepared and it seemed like every video I watched if the guy in second place was close, they won.

"I did what I thought I had to do to win the race. Looking back, I made a mistake in how I went about it. I wouldn't go back and not try to win the race, but I would probably do something a little different."

If he really had a do-over on Daytona, though, Larson would want the talk to be about how well he was running in the Nationwide race before the final accident, and how he ran in six different cars in seven days. He won twice, counting a victory in a midget race at New Smyrna.

"It was definitely an up and down Speedweeks, but I ran six different race cars and not many people get to do that in their career. I got to do it in a week-and-a-half," Larson said.

Why Was Jennifer Lawrence Wearing 5 1/2 Inch Heels? (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

When Jennifer Lawrence won the most coveted award for any actress in Hollywood on Sunday, she was almost literally upstaged by the famous fall she took as she ascended the steps to accept it. The culprit? The big, beautiful Dior Haute Couture gown, in part, with a skirt so voluminous it practically covered Bradley Cooper's mother.

But you know what certainly didn't help? The these 5 1/2-inch Brian Atwood heels she was wearing underneath. Why, God (or JLaw), why??

atwood heels

The 5'9" star of "Silver Linings Playbook" hardly needs any vertical assistance. And there's no denying that those shoes are works of art--but worn under that gown they're like the proverbial tree falling in the forest. Who can even appreciate them?

Our industry likes to say beauty is pain, but what was beautiful about Lena Dunham's 6-inch-heel hobble at the Golden Globes? Or Jennifer Lawrence falling in front of 40 million Americans?

In our opinion, every actress should take a page from Sally Field's, um, playbook and sport sneakers (or at least some flats) under those big ole gowns. Who's with us?

Terry Mills' Gutterball | ALP NT

KenVowles Portrait

Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation, Ken Vowles, said Territory sporting and recreation organisations face increased fees and reduced membership as a result of Terry Mills? unfair PowerWater price hikes.

?Terry Mills? massive price hikes are hurting everyone and everything, and will adversely impact on all levels and disciplines of sport and recreation,? Mr Vowles said.

Mr Vowles said the NT Tenpin Bowling Association have been advised about increased lane rentals of 43 per cent ($17.50 to $25.00) due to the CLP?s price hikes.

?The Territory has some of the best tenpin bowlers in the country, but to stay competitive our bowlers need to train on a regular basis,? Mr Vowles said.

?Some of the highly competitive members will be paying up to $120 per week to practice, along with weekly competition fees of $35, and that?s crippling costs for most people.

?Many sporting venues are doing their best to the CLP?s price hikes, but the reality is most venues have no other option but to pass increased running costs to the consumer.

?NT Tenpin Bowling, and other sporting clubs and groups are now faced with a loss in membership as people try to save money to cover their personal increased power costs,? Mr Vowles said.

?These price hikes will also have a negative impact on fundraising opportunities for sporting groups, who also face a loss of sponsorship as corporations tighten their spending to make ends meet.

?Sport and recreation is a huge part of our lifestyle and it is important that our children grow up healthy and active by participating in sport ? but it seems this Government is hell bent on making it as hard as possible for us to participate.

?Sport and recreation organisations still feel very angry about the scrapping of this year?s Arafura Games.?

A look at the deadliest hot air balloon accidents

Tuesday's crash of a hot air balloon near Egypt's ancient city of Luxor, killing 19 tourists, surpasses what ballooning experts believed to have been the deadliest accident in the sport's 200-year history, a 1989 crash in Australia that left 13 dead.

Some of the worst accidents involving recreational hot air balloons:

? Feb. 26, 2013: A hot air balloon flying over Luxor, in southern Egypt, caught fire and plunged 300 meters (1,000 feet) to the ground, crashing into a sugar cane field and killing at least 19 foreign tourists.

Small Canadian satellite to hunt big space rocks

A suitcase-sized Canadian spacecraft launched Monday aboard an Indian rocket is designed to spot large asteroids that cross paths with our planet.

The Canadian Space Agency's Near-Earth Object Surveillance Satellite, or NEOSSat, will seek out and track huge space rocks orbiting the sun from its position in Earth orbit, its builders say. The satellite will also track space debris and satellites still in service in Earth's orbit, splitting time between its two missions.

"The project with the CSA is essentially to survey the sky and get the best, improved near-Earth asteroid population and the ones that can sometimes cross Earth orbit," said Denis Laurin, a CSA space astronomy program scientist working on the NEOSSat mission.

The $25 million NEOSSat spacecraft is about the size of a suitcase and destined to circle the Earth every 100 minutes in an orbit about 497 miles (800 kilometers) above the planet. [See how NEOSSat tracks asteroids (Video)]

NEOSSat is due to blast off atop an Indian Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle at 7:20 a.m. EST (1220 GMT) on Monday from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India. The PSLV rocket will also launch the larger SARAL ocean-monitoring satellite for the Indian Space Research Organisation and five other small spacecraft, including two tiny nanosatellites billed as the?world's smallest space telescopes.

One benefit to having NEOSSat in orbit and hunting for asteroids is that the satellite can survey the sky during Earth's night and daylight hours, Laurin added.

Most ground-based?asteroid mapping technologies?today require a dark sky, but a space telescope like NEOSSat doesn't depend upon the night sky. When searching from orbit, the satellite can survey parts of the sky close to the sun, a nearly impossible feat for ground telescopes, said William Harvey, a CSA senior project manager with NEOSSat.

NEOSSat will analyze the asteroids it monitors in great detail, giving scientists the chance to understand what the space rocks could be composed of and where their orbits take them, mission scientists said.

The small spacecraft isn't capable of catching relatively small space rocks like the Russian meteor that exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk on Feb. 15, or?asteroid 2012 DA14, a?130 foot (40 meters) rock?that buzzed close by Earth on that same day.

"NEOSSat will probably reduce the impact hazard from unknown large NEO's by a few percent over its lifetime, but is not designed to discover?small asteroids near the Earth?that may be on collision course," NEOSSat co-principal investigator Alan Hildebrand of the University of Calgary told SPACE.com.

Instead, the satellite aims to track Atira and Aten class space rocks ? asteroids that pass within Earth's orbit or occasionally cross the planet's orbit, Hildebrand added.

The asteroids NEOSSat will search for are at least 31 million miles (50 million kilometers) from Earth. The satellite will look slightly behind and in front of the Earth, as well as east and west of the sun to spot any asteroids far off in Earth's orbit.

"I'm hoping people will get interested in following up the NEOSSat mission with other missions. Maybe some of the?asteroids?will become candidates for future missions or mining," Harvey said. "They could be unmanned or other endeavors. It's a very interesting time. This could be the start of one of the next missions for humans."

NEOSSat's mission is part of the High Earth Orbit Surveillance System project by the Defence Research and Development Canada agency, which is a partner in the mission with CSA. It was built by Microsat Systems Canada, Inc., which also built the CSA's small MOST space telescope that launched in 2003.

You can watch the launch of NEOSSat live via?India's official Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle webcast.

BlackBerry launches the Z10 in India for $800

BlackBerry launches the Z10 in India for a cool $800

The BB10-toting BlackBerry Z10 has just been unveiled in India, priced at Rs 43,490 ($800) for an unlocked unit. Coinciding with the announcement, the BlackBerry Music Store has also gone live in the country starting today, offering a mix of local and international music. Support for local languages aside, the app offerings have been given an Indian flavor with the inclusion of country-specific goodies spanning various genres including news, banking, travel, entertainment and lifestyle. The subcontinent is quite important for the company formerly known as RIM, and its devices are still popular in the region, despite taking a beating in market share recently (see coverage), courtesy the BBM service that makes them the go-to smartphones for those hooked on to the instant messaging platform. However, the Z10's sticker price puts it in the same league as the 16GB iPhone 5 and HTC's full-HD Butterfly (both costing roughly $50 more), and it remains to be seen how the price-sensitive Indian market will react to the new entrant.

Taking the gamble out of DNA sequencing: How much can be learned in a large-scale experiment

Feb. 24, 2013 ? Two USC scientists have developed an algorithm that could help make DNA sequencing affordable enough for clinics -- and could be useful to researchers of all stripes.

Andrew Smith, a computational biologist at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, developed the algorithm along with USC graduate student Timothy Daley to help predict the value of sequencing more DNA, to be published in Nature Methods on February 24.

Extracting information from the DNA means deciding how much to sequence: sequencing too little and you may not get the answers you are looking for, but sequence too much and you will waste both time and money. That expensive gamble is a big part of what keeps DNA sequencing out of the hands of clinicians. But not for long, according to Smith.

"It seems likely that some clinical applications of DNA sequencing will become routine in the next five to 10 years," Smith said. "For example, diagnostic sequencing to understand the properties of a tumor will be much more effective if the right mathematical methods are in place."

The beauty of Smith and Daley's algorithm, which predicts the size and composition of an unseen population based on a small sample, lies in its broad applicability.

"This is one of those great instances where a specific challenge in our research led us to uncover a powerful algorithm that has surprisingly broad applications," Smith said.

Think of it: how often do scientists need to predict what they haven't seen based on what they have? Public health officials could use the algorithm to estimate the population of HIV positive individuals; astronomers could use it to determine how many exoplanets exist in our galaxy based on the ones they have already discovered; and biologists could use it to estimate the diversity of antibodies in an individual.

The mathematical underpinnings of the algorithm rely on a model of sampling from ecology known as capture-recapture. In this model, individuals are captured and tagged so that a recapture of the same individual will be known -- and the number of times each individual was captured can be used to make inferences about the population as a whole.

In this way scientists can estimate, for example, the number of gorillas remaining in the wild. In DNA sequencing, the individuals are the various different genomic molecules in a sample. However, the mathematical models used for counting gorillas don't work on the scale of DNA sequencing.

"The basic model has been known for decades, but the way it has been used makes it highly unstable in most applications. We took a different approach that depends on lots of computing power and seems to work best in large-scale applications like modern DNA sequencing," Daley said.

Scientists faced a similar problem in the early days of the human genome sequencing project. A mathematical solution was provided by Michael Waterman of USC, in 1988, which found widespread use. Recent advances in sequencing technology, however, require thinking differently about the mathematical properties of DNA sequencing data.

"Huge data sets required a novel approach. I'm very please it was developed here at USC," said Waterman.

This research was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health National Human Genome Research Institute (R01 HG005238 and P50 HG002790).

Ace Frehley Home's In Foreclosure - Business Insider

s_bukley / Shutterstock.com

Right on the heels of the Lohan family's brush with foreclosure, ?a former KISS rocker is the latest celebrity in mortgage trouble.

Ace Frehley (nee Paul), who played guitar for KISS throughout the 70s and rejoined the band on tour in the late 90s, is on the hook for $735,000 worth of missed mortgage payments on his Yorktown, N.Y. home, the The Journal News reports.

The news surfaced after his bank,?U.S. Bank National Association, filed a foreclosure claim on feb. 15.?

And the mortgage issue is just the beginning.?

Frehley has neglected nearly two years' worth of unpaid property taxes, according to the Journal News. That includes a?"2011 lien of $5,131.61 for town and county taxes, as well as $13,425.94 for unpaid 2012 county, school and town taxes."

If Frehley can't come up with the cash, chances are the bank (or the county) will wind up selling the home at auction. And from what little information we have on his case, we're willing to bet that's exactly what Frehley wants.?

Frehley reportedly stopped paying on the home two years ago, just a few years after he took over the title on the 3-acre, 2,441 sq. ft. pad back in 2006. ?Many underwater homeowners ?? those who owe more on their homes than they are actually worth ?? choose to cut their losses, stop making mortgage payments and simply wait for their mortgage lender to foreclose.

In the meantime, they can start putting their resources into a smaller home or apartment they can afford.?

The foreclosure process can take anywhere from under a year to more than two years to complete, so it makes sense we're only hearing of Frehley's foreclosure notice now.?

Oakland Athletics Participate In A Baseball Game, Score Fewer Runs Than Opponent

Nobody really "loses" in Spring Training. Well, Scott Sizemore technically lost last spring, but that's different. What I'm saying is that the A's lost a baseball game today, but it doesn't matter because it's February 23rd.

Today was the beginning of a beautiful journey. At noon, the Oakland Athletics officially opened their Cactus League season. The 2013 season may not have actually started yet, but it feels a whole lot closer now. The A's played a game today!

There is bad news, though. I'm at kind of a loss as to how to recap this game. You see, the downside of Spring Training is that, since the games don't count or matter, nobody pays to broadcast them. This game wasn't on TV, so I couldn't watch it. It was broadcast on the radio, but my tiny 21st century attention span makes it really hard to focus on man I'm hungry, I'm going to go make a sandwich. Hey, are you watching the Oscars tomorrow?

Wait, what were we talking about again? Oh yeah, beer. I mean, the Brewers. And the A's. Playing baseball. Oh, that's right, I was recapping the game. Unfortunately, all I have to go on is the play-by-play, the snippets of radio broadcast which my stupid brain retained, and the comments on the Game Thread. Since the game itself doesn't really matter, I'm going to give a brief rundown of the play-by-play before moving on to individual comments about A's players and their accomplishments/failures.

The thing to remember about Spring Training is that it's all about getting ready for the games which actually count. It's not completely about winning or losing, but also easing into routines, building up arm strength, working on new pitches or batting stances, and getting or staying healthy. Spring Training stats and game results are most interesting when they relate to one or both of the following things: positional battles (in this case, middle infield and bullpen), and top prospects.

That being said, a game did occur today. Here is what happened. First off, Jesse Chavez started for Oakland. That should give you an idea of how seriously to take things at this point in the spring (winter?). In the first inning, he gave up a homer to Ryan Braun, because duh. In the 4th, reliever Justin Thomas walked a pair with one out; his replacement, Fernando Rodriguez, uncorked a wild pitch to move the runners up before allowing an RBI groundout to former Angels prospect Jean Segura. In the 7th, Oakland's Shane Peterson doubled to right off of something called a Santo Manzanillo, and top prospect Michael Choice singled sharply up the middle to score him. That was it. Oakland had 5 of the game's 8 hits, but Milwaukee won 2-1.

Let's have a look at the two interesting parts of Spring Training: positional battles, and top prospects.

All three of the leading second base candidates played today. Jemile Weeks started at 2nd, Grant Green replaced him in the 5th, and Scott Sizemore was the DH. Weeks had a very positive day, lining a double to right to lead off the game and making what was apparently a very impressive play on defense to start a 4-6-3 double play in the 2nd. He grounded out a couple of times, once into a double play, but at least he was hitting it on the ground and not flying out to medium-deep right-center. It's about all that you could hope to see from Weeks: slap hitting and a nice defensive play. (Edit: That is meant as a positive, as in "Weeks did both of the things which I was looking for him to do.")

Sizemore got three plate appearances. He struck out swinging in the 2nd against Mike Fiers, hit a ground-ball single in the 5th, and drew a walk in the 7th. Grant Green had one plate appearance, in which he worked a 3-0 count, thought he'd drawn the walk on 3-1, and then struck out on a foul tip; he also fielded a grounder on defense, drawing praise from Ray Fosse on Green's strong arm.

In his first taste of American baseball, Hiro Nakajima drew a walk in the 1st off of Fiers, but finished 0-for-2 with a strikeout.

There were several notable minor-leaguers in this game. Choice and Peterson made the biggest impacts with their 7th inning hits, but both also struck out in their second plate appearances. Michael Taylor struck out in his only plate appearance, and Luke Montz and Andy Parrino each went 0-for-2. Scott Moore looked impressive, however, drawing a walk in his only plate appearance and playing "a very slick first base," according to Susan Slusser. Moore is a guy who I'll be keeping a close eye on this spring as a potential backup infield option, so it was nice to hear that he got off to a good start.

On the pitching side, Oakland sent 6 men to the mound to cover 8 innings. They were:

Jesse Chavez: Still terrible. Move along.

Justin Thomas: Recorded 4 outs and issued 4 walks. Next.

Fernando Rodriguez: Failed to strand one of his inherited runners, but did end the inning with a strikeout.

Bruce Billings: Threw 2 sharp innings. Billings, acquired in 2011 for Mark Ellis, was impressive as a starter last year for Sacramento. His name doesn't come up a lot due to Oakland's depth of quality starters, but he could be a dark horse candidate to get some emergency starts in Oakland in 2013 (especially if Sonny Gray isn't ready to go when the bell rings).

Mike Ekstrom: Threw a 1-2-3 inning. I just can't shake the feeling that this guy is going to play a significant role in Oakland's bullpen at some point in 2013, just like Jim Miller and Evan Scribner did last year.

Arnold Leon: Issued a leadoff walk to a person named Scooter, which is just unacceptable. I'm assuming he was a child, based on his name. Arnold Leon should really be able to get out a child. He made up for it by inducing a double play and a flyout, but does that really make up for walking a little kid?

And there you have it. That is everything interesting that happened today. Wait, Brandon Moss got a hit. And Seth Smith drew a walk at one point. There, that's literally everything I can think of. What else do you want from me??

The first game is in the books, and it feels so good. Sure, Oakland technically lost the game, but it's irrelevant. A day went by and nobody got injured. That's a win in Oakland terms. And guess what? They play two tomorrow. Welcome back, baseball.

Facebook Adds Free Voice Calling to its iOS App

Facebook Adds Free Voice Calling to its iOS AppFacebook just updated its iOS app with a number of new features, most notably the ability to make voice calls over Wi-Fi and data to your Facebook friends.

This feature came to Facebook Messenger awhile ago, but now anyone with the regular Facebook app can take advantage in the US and Canada. Just open up your chat list from the button in the upper right-hand corner, tap on a friend, and choose "Free Call." Your friends will have to have the latest version of Facebook for iOS and be signed into chat to receive calls. It's far from the only VoIP solution on the iPhone, but since most of your friends probably have Facebook anyway, it's a handy way to contact them without using minutes. Just watch how much data you use if you have a limited plan.

Thirteen Chadian soldiers, 65 rebels killed in Mali

N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Thirteen Chadian soldiers were killed in fighting in northern Mali on Friday, the heaviest casualties sustained by French and African troops since the launch of a military campaign against Islamist rebels there six weeks ago, Chad's army said.

Chadian troops killed 65 al Qaeda-linked fighters in the clashes that began before midday in the Adrar des Ifoghas mountains near Mali's northern border with Algeria.

"The provisional toll is ... on the enemy's side, five vehicles destroyed and 65 terrorists killed. We deplore the deaths of 13 of our valiant soldiers," said a statement from the army general staff read on state radio.

France intervened in its former West African colony last month to stop a southward offensive by Islamist rebels who seized control of the north last April.

Troops from neighboring African nations - including 2,000 soldiers from Chad - have since deployed to Mali and are meant to take over leadership of the operation when French forces begin a planned withdrawal next month.

But continuing violence since the Islamists were driven from major urban areas highlights the risk of French and African forces becoming entangled in a messy guerrilla war as they try to help Mali's weak army counter bombings and armed raids.

Android 4.2.1 update for international Galaxy S3 leaks

Galaxy S3 Android 4.2.1 Galaxy S3

Frequent firmware leaker SamMobile has just released what it believes is a build of the Android 4.2.1 update for the international (i9300) Samsung Galaxy SIII (S3). What we're looking at here is someone testing the new firmware -- Android 4.2.1 JOP40D -- that has chosen to give a system dump for others to try. It looks like many of the new features such as lockscreen widgets and Daydream are included, but this is certainly not final firmware.

SamMobile has re-packaged this firmware into an ODIN Flashable file that other users with the device can try out if they wish. There are of course risks involved, above and beyond the binary counter being increased and the device reporting as "modified" when running the firmware. If you're interested, you can give it a look at the source link below.

California Best Buy stores must pay $875K in pricing suit

Ron Dauphin/Flickr

A Riverside judge has ordered California Best Buys to pay $875,000 to settle a lawsuit alleging the company overcharged customers.

A Riverside County judge has ordered Best Buy Stores to pay nearly $900,000 and to institute a special discount program to settle a lawsuit alleging the company charged more than advertised prices at some California stores.

The district attorneys of Riverside, San Diego and Los Angeles counties filed the case this week after weights and measures officials documented overcharges during inspections.

On Friday Judge Daniel Ottolia ordered the company to pay $600,000 in penalties, about $175,000 in costs and $100,000 in restitution.

For the next five years the California stores must offer customers $3 off the lowest advertised price of an item if they are overcharged at checkout.

Best Buy spokesman Jeffrey Shelman said in a statement that the company apologizes for the tiny fraction of items with pricing errors.

'I'm a monster': Veterans 'alone' in their guilt

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, former Marine Capt. Timothy Kudo thinks of himself as a killer ? and he carries the guilt every day.

"I can't forgive myself," he says. "And the people who can forgive me are dead."

With American troops at war for more than a decade, there's been an unprecedented number of studies into war zone psychology and an evolving understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder. Clinicians suspect some troops are suffering from what they call "moral injuries" ? wounds from having done something, or failed to stop something, that violates their moral code.

Though there may be some overlap in symptoms, moral injuries aren't what most people think of as PTSD, the nightmares and flashbacks of terrifying, life-threatening combat events. A moral injury tortures the conscience; symptoms include deep shame, guilt and rage. It's not a medical problem, and it's unclear how to treat it, says retired Col. Elspeth Ritchie, former psychiatry consultant to the Army surgeon general.

"The concept ... is more an existentialist one," she says.

The Marines, who prefer to call moral injuries "inner conflict," started a few years ago teaching unit leaders to identify the problem. And the Defense Department has approved funding for a study among Marines at California's Camp Pendleton to test a therapy that doctors hope will ease guilt.

But a solution could be a long time off.

"PTSD is a complex issue," says Navy Cmdr. Leslie Hull-Ryde, a Pentagon spokeswoman.

Killing in war is the issue for some troops who believe they have a moral injury, but Ritchie says it also can come from a range of experiences, such as guarding prisoners or watching Iraqis kill Iraqis as they did during the sectarian violence in 2006-2007.

"You may not have actually done something wrong by the law of war, but by your own humanity you feel that it's wrong," says Ritchie, now chief clinical officer at the District of Columbia's Department of Mental Health.

Kudo's remorse stems in part from the 2010 accidental killing of two Afghan teenagers on a motorcycle. His unit was fighting insurgents when the pair approached from a distance and appeared to be shooting as well.

Kudo says what Marines mistook for guns were actually "sticks and bindles, like you'd seen in old cartoons with hobos." What Marines thought were muzzle flashes were likely glints of light bouncing off the motorcycle's chrome.

"There's no day ? whether it's in the shower or whether it's walking down the street ... that I don't think about things that happened over there," says Kudo, now a graduate student at New York University.

"Human beings aren't just turn-on, turn-off switches," Veterans of Foreign Wars spokesman Joe Davis says, noting that moral injury is just a different name for a familiar military problem. "You're raised 'Thou shalt not kill,' but you do it for self-preservation or for your buddies."

Kudo never personally shot anyone. But he feels responsible for the deaths of the teens on the motorcycle. Like other officers who've spoken about moral injuries, he also feels responsible for deaths that resulted from orders he gave in other missions.

The hardest part, Kudo says, is that "nobody talks about it."

As executive officer of a Marine company, Kudo also felt inadequate when he had to comfort a subordinate grieving over the death of another Marine.

Dr. Brett Litz, a clinical psychologist with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Boston, sees moral injury, the loss of comrades and the terror associated with PTSD as a "three-legged stool" of troop suffering. Though there's little data on moral injury, he says a study asked soldiers seeking counseling for PTSD in Texas what their main problem was; it broke down to "roughly a third, a third and a third" among those with fear, those with loss issues and those with moral injury.

The raw number of people who have moral injuries also isn't known. It's not an official diagnosis for purposes of getting veteran benefits, though it's believed by some doctors that many vets with moral injuries are getting care on a diagnosis of PTSD ? care that wouldn't specifically fit their problem.

Like PTSD, which could affect an estimated 20 percent of troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, moral injury is not experienced by all troops.

"It's in the eye of the beholder," says retired Navy Capt. William Nash, a psychiatrist who headed Marine Corps combat stress programs and has partnered with Litz on research. The vast majority of ground combat fighters may be able to pull the trigger without feeling they did something wrong, he says.

As the military has focused on fear-based PTSD, it hasn't paid enough attention to loss and moral injury, Litz and others believe. And that has hampered the development of strategies to help troops with those other problems and train them to avoid the problems in the first place, he says.

Lumping people into the PTSD category "renders soldiers automatically into mental patients instead of wounded souls," writes Iraq vet Tyler Boudreau, a former Marine captain and assistant operations officer to an infantry battalion.

Boudreau resigned his commission after having questions of conscience. He wrote in the Massachusetts Review, a literary magazine, that being diagnosed with PTSD doesn't account for nontraumatic events that are morally troubling: "It's far too easy for people at home, particularly those not directly affected by war ... to shed a disingenuous tear for the veterans, donate a few bucks and whisk them off to the closest shrink ... out of sight and out of mind" and leaving "no incentive in the community or in the household to engage them."

So what should be done?

"I don't think we know," Ritchie says.

Troops who express ethical or spiritual problems have long been told to see the chaplain. Chaplains see troops struggling with moral injury "at the micro level, down in the trenches," says Lt. Col. Jeffrey L. Voyles, licensed counselor and supervisor at the Army chaplain training program in Fort Benning, Ga. A soldier wrestling with the right or wrong of a particular war zone event might ask: "Do I need to confess this?" Or, Voyles says, a soldier will say he's "gone past the point of being redeemed, (the point where) God could forgive him" ? and he uses language like this:

"I'm a monster."

"I let somebody down."

"I didn't do as much as I could do."

Some chaplains and civilian church organizations have been organizing community events where troops tell their stories, hoping that will help them re-integrate into society.

Some soldiers report being helped by Army programs like yoga or art therapy. The Army also has a program to promote resilience and another called Comprehensive Soldier Fitness to promote mental as well as physical wellness; some clinicians say the latter program may help reduce risk of moral injury but doesn't help troops recognize when they or a buddy have the problem.

Nash says the Marines are using "psychological first aid techniques" to help service members deal with moral injury, loss and other traumatic events. But it's a young program, not uniformly implemented and just now undergoing outside evaluation for its effectiveness, he says.

At Camp Pendleton, the therapy trial will be tailored to each Marine's war experiences; troops with fear-based problems might use a standard PTSD approach; those with moral injury may have an imaginary conversation with the lost person.

Forgiveness, more than anything, is key to helping troops who feel they have transgressed, Nash says.

But the issue is so much more complicated that wholesale solutions across the military, if there are any, will likely be some time coming.

Many in the armed forces view PTSD as weakness. Similarly, they feel the term "moral injury" is insulting, implying an ethical failing in a force whose motto stresses honor, duty and country.

At the same time, lawyers don't like the idea of someone asking troops to incriminate themselves in war crimes ? real or imagined.

That leaves a question for troops, doctors, chaplains, lawyers and the military brass: How do you help people if they don't feel they can say what's bothering them?
