Terry Dunn talks Downtown, politics and KC sports

In this week?s print edition, the Kansas City Business Journal profiles Terry Dunn, CEO of JE Dunn Construction.

A few weeks ago, I sat down with Dunn for the first time. I was surprised at how candid and patient he was with me when I asked some prodding questions about his family, personal life, faith and relationship with the Kansas City Chiefs.

What remains to be done in Downtown?

The conservatory coming Downtown or in the Crossroads Arts District. We know that there?s a number of apartment-type projects that are going to be cut loose over the next year in the downtown area. I see a lot of good things taking place. The Civic Council of Kansas City is taking a leadership position on the translational research facility that will go on Hospital Hill. We see breaking ground today on the student housing for the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Beacon Hill as a major development. The Cordish Co. is trying to bring forward a high-rise project. I think there?s been potential dialogue about an additional convention center hotel. I think we?re going to hit a tipping point that will be very positive momentum for Kansas City at large with the success of Downtown.

How large a role do you want to play in it?

I think what I like to do is be engaged and provide the right level of support or leadership to move the ball down the field. As a civic leader, you can?t do everything, but you can be engaged in most things that are happening, and you don?t have to be out in the limelight. I would rather see success than be self-gratified by my own success.

Austin reports about construction, transportation, engineering and architecture.
