Camryn Morais, 13, plays guitar and loves indie rock, believing that these artists focus on deeper meanings and not ?senseless stuff.?
This attitude about music reflects her attitude about life and her platform as a Miss Massachusetts Junior Teen contestant.? Morais, a Freetown native and a Freetown-Lakeville Middle School graduate, has been taking this attitude everywhere lately. Next month, she will take it to Florida, where she will compete in the USA Ambassador Pageant.
She earned the chance to take part in the national event when she was crowned Miss Massachusetts Junior Teen for the USA Ambassador Pageant earlier this year at the Hilton Boston/Woburn in Woburn.
Morais has not even reached 14 years old yet, but radiates a maturity beyond her years.
She said she was exposed to pageants at a young age, thanks to her sister Hayley, 18. Morais also credits pageant organizer Barbara Thurston for getting her involved? in a pageant program. Through Thurston, Morais competed and won Miss Massachusetts Pre-Teen in 2011.
Over the years, Morais has developed a different sense of pageants, believing it extends way beyond external beauty.
She recites the acronym SLICC quite a bit, which stands for success through leadership, integrity, confidence and character.
?They are really not about beauty ... They are into scholarship pageants ? things that will benefit you as a person,? she said of this new pageant movement. ?You do an interview and onstage questions, practice public speaking so when you go out in the real world you will be equipped and do community services.?
Morais? platform as a pageant contestant mostly focuses on her weekly blog, www.mirrorbabble.com. Through this blog, she encourages young girls to have a healthy body image and focus on what is on the inside. In fact, she often visits local Girl Scout troops and promotes that message.
Her maturity is especially evident through passages in her blog. On one page, she writes, ?Society has always told us that ?inner beauty is the best kind of beauty.? However, no celebrity is ever recongnized for having a nice heart and an intelligent mind.?
At Freetown-Lakeville Middle School, she was an honors student and a leader in the Friends of Rachel group. She recently took part in a leadership conference hosted by Bridgewater State University, according to a written release.
She is also a member of the children?s vocal troupe Voices in Time, through which she volunteers her time entertaining seniors in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The group also sings at various community events. She has also won several singing competitions and is also involved in dance, according to a written release.
