Retailers Track Customers - Business Insider

Teens shop in Fargo, North Dakota on Black Friday.

It's becoming more commonplace for physical retailers to track you from the moment you enter the store.?

That's because physical retail stores still account for 90% of all purchases.

Retailers like Nordstrom, Family Dollar, and Warby Parker are gathering customer data from smartphones and using video surveillance to determine optimal store layouts and customized coupons offerings, The New York Times reports.

Using Wi-Fi signals from your smartphone, retailers can gain insights about how much time you spend in the store, which sections you spend the most time in, and how long it takes you to browse before making a purchase.?

Some people argue that it's a huge invasion of privacy. But retailers maintain that tracking customers in the physical retail environment is the same as tracking them online through cookies.?

Finnish startup Walkbase is among several companies aiming to help retailers learn more about their customers' behavior.

Walkbase tracks every customer with a WLAN-enabled smartphone. That means any phone with Wi-Fi turned on is subject to tracking, but all of the data collected is completely anonymous. Users can also opt-out of being tracked by simply turning off Wi-Fi.

Walkbase provides analytics like capture rate (percentage of passerbys that actually walk into the store), volume trends (changes in foot traffic), dwell time (how long they spend inside the store), repeat versus new customers, and behavior inside the store.

New York startup Nomi similarly relies on a customer's smartphone to provide real-time analytics to traditional retailers. But Nomi actually matches each phone with an individual in order to create a profile of them. The profile features information like recent visits, purchase history, and Web browsing history.

Nomi's analytics are anonymous unless a customer opts-in and chooses to identify himself as part of an existing loyalty program.

But Nomi and Walkbase are just two of many companies trying to help retailers learn more about their customers and better compete against e-commerce giants like Amazon.

Deal on huge marine reserves blocked

International talks on establishing huge marine reserves in Antarctica have failed to reach a consensus.

Russia blocked attempts by western countries to set up the protected areas in the Ross Sea and Eastern Antarctica.

The Russian representative challenged the legal basis that would allow for the creation of such reserves, according to organisations at the talks in Germany.

The proposal was previously scuppered when governments met in 2012.

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) is made up of countries with an interest in the Southern Ocean, and includes Australia, the US, the UK, China and Russia among its members. Any decisions taken require consensus among all parties.

This meeting in Bremerhaven has been called to deal specifically with proposals for the establishment of reserves that would ban fishing and protect species including seals and penguins. If successful the plans would more than double the area of the world's oceans that are protected.

The US and New Zealand were again backing a proposal to create a marine protected zone in the Ross Sea with a total area of 2.3 million sq km, making it the biggest in the world.

Another proposal from Australia, France and the European Union would have created protected areas in East Antarctica covering around 1.63 million sq km.

Freetown student Camryn Morais to compete in USA Ambassador Pageant in Florida

Camryn Morais, 13, plays guitar and loves indie rock, believing that these artists focus on deeper meanings and not ?senseless stuff.?

This attitude about music reflects her attitude about life and her platform as a Miss Massachusetts Junior Teen contestant.? Morais, a Freetown native and a Freetown-Lakeville Middle School graduate, has been taking this attitude everywhere lately. Next month, she will take it to Florida, where she will compete in the USA Ambassador Pageant.

She earned the chance to take part in the national event when she was crowned Miss Massachusetts Junior Teen for the USA Ambassador Pageant earlier this year at the Hilton Boston/Woburn in Woburn.

Morais has not even reached 14 years old yet, but radiates a maturity beyond her years.

She said she was exposed to pageants at a young age, thanks to her sister Hayley, 18. Morais also credits pageant organizer Barbara Thurston for getting her involved? in a pageant program. Through Thurston, Morais competed and won Miss Massachusetts Pre-Teen in 2011.

Over the years, Morais has developed a different sense of pageants, believing it extends way beyond external beauty.

She recites the acronym SLICC quite a bit, which stands for success through leadership, integrity, confidence and character.

?They are really not about beauty ... They are into scholarship pageants ? things that will benefit you as a person,? she said of this new pageant movement. ?You do an interview and onstage questions, practice public speaking so when you go out in the real world you will be equipped and do community services.?

Morais? platform as a pageant contestant mostly focuses on her weekly blog, www.mirrorbabble.com. Through this blog, she encourages young girls to have a healthy body image and focus on what is on the inside. In fact, she often visits local Girl Scout troops and promotes that message.

Her maturity is especially evident through passages in her blog. On one page, she writes, ?Society has always told us that ?inner beauty is the best kind of beauty.? However, no celebrity is ever recongnized for having a nice heart and an intelligent mind.?

At Freetown-Lakeville Middle School, she was an honors student and a leader in the Friends of Rachel group. She recently took part in a leadership conference hosted by Bridgewater State University, according to a written release.

She is also a member of the children?s vocal troupe Voices in Time, through which she volunteers her time entertaining seniors in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The group also sings at various community events. She has also won several singing competitions and is also involved in dance, according to a written release.

For more information, visit her website at www.mirrorbabble.com or her fanpage on Facebook at Camryn Morais ? Miss Massachusetts Junior Teen USA Ambassador 2013.

Iceberg: Antarctica loses Chicago-sized chunk of ice

Iceberg: Antarctica is somewhat smaller this week, as the?frozen continent's Pine Island Glacier calved off a massive iceberg on Monday.

A massive iceberg, larger than the city of Chicago, broke off of Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier on Monday (July 8), and is now floating freely in the Amundsen Sea, according to a team of German scientists.

The newborn iceberg measures about 278 square miles (720 square kilometers), and was seen by TerraSAR-X, an earth-observing satellite operated by the German Space Agency (DLR). Scientists with NASA's Operation IceBridgefirst discovered a?giant crack in the Pine Island Glacier?in October 2011, as they were flying over and surveying the sprawling ice sheet.

At that time, the fissure spanned about 15 miles (24 km) in length and 164 feet (50 meters) in width, according to researchers at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Germany. In May 2012, satellite images revealed a second rift had formed near the northern side of the first crack.

"As a result of these cracks, one giant iceberg broke away from the glacier tongue," Angelika Humbert, a glaciologist at the Alfred Wegener Institute, said in a statement. [Photo Gallery: Antarctica?s Pine Island Glacier Cracks]

Humbert and her colleagues studied high resolution radar images taken by the TerraSAR-X satellite to track the changes in the two cracks, and to observe the processes behind glacier movements.

"Using the images we have been able to follow how the larger crack on the Pine Island Glacier extended initially to a length of 28 kilometers [17 miles]," Nina Wilkens, one of the team researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute, said in a statement. "Shortly before the 'birth' of the iceberg, the gap then widened bit by bit so that it measured around 540 meters [1,770 feet] at its widest point."

As the?Pine Island Glacier retreats?and flows out to sea, it develops and drops icebergs as part of a natural and cyclical process, Humbert said. But, the way the ice breaks, or "calves," is still somewhat mysterious.

"Glaciers are constantly in motion," she said. "They have their very own flow dynamics. Their ice is exposed to permanent tensions and the calving of icebergs is still largely unresearched."

The Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, the part of the glacier that extends out into the water, last produced large icebergs in 2001 and 2007.

Apple responds to electrocution case

News

Apple has sent a message of condolence to the family of a 23-year-old former flight attendant who was killed by an electric shock on Thursday 11 July. Ma Ailun, a former employee of China Southern Airlines, reportedly died when she made a phone call while her iPhone 5 was recharging.

Police in the?Hui Autonomous Prefecture of Changji in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, where the young woman lived, have not confirmed that a mobile phone was involved as the case is under investigation.

?We feel deeply saddened about the accident and send sincere condolences to her family. We will thoroughly investigate the accident and collaborate with the police investigation,? Apple China said in a statement.

The ninemsn.com website claims that Ma Ailun?s family are claiming compensation from the Cupertino company, quoting Ma?s older sister, who posted on the (Chinese equivalent of Twitter)?Weibo social network , ?I hope that Apple gives us an explanation.?

She added that her sister had bought the iPhone in December in an official Apple store and was using the correct original charger to charge the phone. According to the?Sina English website, she?also tweeted, ?I want to warn everyone else not to make phone calls when your mobile phone is recharging.?

The website also noted that experts say mobile phones have a low output of just three to five volts, but a problem such as a broken wire could lead to a shock of 220 volts being experienced. It went on to mention a 2010 case, in which a man in north-east China was killed by electric shock in similar circumstances, but was recharging his phone with an unauthorised charger.

Obama walks tightrope in reacting to Zimmerman verdict

By Mark Felsenthal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin left President Barack Obama trying to dial down tensions on Sunday while reassuring supporters he still stands against discrimination and gun violence.

Obama called for calm as activists outraged by the verdict planned rallies and urged the administration to pursue civil rights charges against Zimmerman. On the other side, Republicans said he inflamed tensions by wading into the issue in 2012, when he said, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon."

"I know this case has elicited strong passions," the president said Sunday in a statement. "And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken."

Critics charged that some of those tensions were of his own making: the president's willingness to comment on the case may have highlighted the racially charged nature of the trial.

"The president engaged in this and turned it into a political issue that should have been handled exclusively with law and order," Republican Representative Steve King said on Fox News Sunday.

The clearing of Zimmerman by a six-person jury in Florida has also stirred disappointment that justice may not be served and raised fears that unhappiness about the verdict could lead to civil unrest.

Critics contend Zimmerman wrongly suspected 17-year-old Martin of being a criminal because he was black, making it a civil rights issue. Rallies were planned for New York, San Diego, Sacramento and elsewhere on Sunday.

Zimmerman's lawyers argued he acted in self-defense the night of February 26, 2012, when he and Martin met inside a gated community in the central Florida town of Sanford.

In the wake of the trial, civil rights leaders including Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Benjamin Jealous, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), urged the Justice Department to pursue federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

The Department of Justice said it is reviewing its options but indicated that its scope may be narrow given its ability to bring civil rights cases and limitations on the heels of the Florida court's acquittal.

"Zimmerman was not a state actor," said Laurie Levenson, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. "Much of the civil rights law only applies to state actors. This is a private individual."

Martin's family could bring a civil lawsuit for wrongful death or negligence, Levenson said. The Justice Department could conduct an investigation into whether local law enforcement officers treat people of color differently than whites, she said.

Even as Obama called for the public to respect the court's decision, he also sought to channel the emotion surrounding the case into support for efforts to strengthen controls over gun ownership.

"We should ask ourselves if we're doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis," he said.

Obama's campaign to curb gun violence after the Newtown, Connecticut, school massacre of 20 children and six adults in December was defeated when the U.S. Senate rejected a plan to expand background checks for gun buyers.
