By the time the Miami Heat get on their plane to come home late Sunday night, they could have a stranglehold on the race to finish with the NBA's best record.

All they have to do is win at San Antonio. That, of course, is no easy task.

The Heat (57-15) take a two-game lead in the NBA standings over the Spurs (55-17) into their matchup on Sunday. A win would essentially provide Miami a four-game cushion with nine remaining, given that the Heat also would control any potential head-to-head tiebreaker with San Antonio.

If the Heat lose, the race for home-court advantage throughout the entirety of the playoffs could turn into a frantic, down-to-the-wire deal.

"It's always good to play the best, to play against the best," LeBron James said. "It'll be an opportunity for us. We just want to get better, man. The game Sunday doesn't define our season or how we go from there. We just want to continue to move forward and get better throughout the rest of the season."

Miami has won 28 of its last 29 games overall, getting back on the winning track at New Orleans on Friday, two days after Chicago snapped a 27-game Heat winning streak. But San Antonio has won 28 of its last 30 games at home, and facing the Spurs on the road is traditionally a painful expedition for many members of the Heat ? as it tends to be for everyone else in the NBA.

Dwyane Wade is 1-4 at San Antonio, sitting out three other Heat losses there during his career. Chris Bosh is 1-7. James is 3-7. Shane Battier ? a longtime player in the Western Conference ? has enjoyed eight wins from the visitors' side when facing the Spurs, and also been on the losing end 16 times there.

"It's obviously a very, very, very good team," Wade said. "Very tough place to play, so I think our mentality and how we approach the game is going to be important. You just try to go out there and compete, as we do every night, try to get a great road win. It's not going to be easy but that's kind of what we enjoy."

The only other meeting between the clubs this season was Nov. 29 in Miami, a strange game in that Spurs coach Gregg Popovich ? citing a desire to rest his best players at the end of a long road trip ? sent Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Danny Green home before the game.

With guys like Patty Mills, Nando De Colo and Matt Bonner filling out the starting lineup ? they've combined to make four other starts this season ? the Spurs almost beat the Heat anyway, leading by five with 2:13 left before getting outscored 12-2 in a wild Miami finish that gave the Heat a 105-100 win.

Ginobili played just under three minutes in Friday night's win over the Los Angeles Clippers because of a hamstring issue, and Popovich indicated he probably won't be ready to face the Heat.

"I don't think he can play," Popovich said.

The Spurs have won six of their last seven games. Of those six wins, only one came by double figures, an 11-point victory over Golden State. The average margin of the other five wins in that span, over Dallas, Cleveland, Utah, Denver and Clippers was 3.4 points, and the only loss was a one-pointer at Houston.

"It's great challenges, good preparation for us for the playoffs," Parker said. "Denver is a great team, Clippers a great team and now we've got Miami. They're the best in the league. They went on the unbelievable run and it's going to be another great game."

This game could have been one of the most-watched among regular-season games in years if Miami had not lost in Chicago on Wednesday. Had the Heat won there and won in New Orleans, as they did on Friday, they would have been going for their 30th straight win on this trip to San Antonio in what will be touted either way as a potential NBA Finals preview.

"I just want you to know the Heat are going to be just fine," said President Barack Obama, a noted Bulls fan during a stop in Miami on Friday. "They're going to be OK. They are playing basketball the right way."

The Heat streak is gone, but standings-wise, it's still a big deal.

"Very good team, obviously the defending champs," Duncan said. "I think they won 62 in a row or something like that. It'll be a great game. I know our crowd will be excited and we'll be excited to continue our homestand."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has said everyone on his roster should be considered day-to-day for the remainder of the regular season. This is when teams like to ensure that players get some rest wherever they can.

And the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference is already clinched, meaning all that's really left on the Heat to-do list before the opening round of the playoffs is finish atop the NBA's regular-season standings.

"The mindset will be, first and foremost, playing our game and making sure that we establish our identity," Spoelstra said. "That's the whole thing with us. When we do that and play the way we're capable, results take care of themselves.

"We don't want to get caught up in too much of the results. We have a big goal in mind. That's the No. 1 goal and that's the only goal we've talked about."

By playing on our delusions and our fears, companies tempt us to shell out for needless items, and that can wreak havoc on our finances.

Pet products
Americans spent an estimated $53 billion on their pets in 2012, a number that's grown nearly 30 percent in the past five years, even as the economy tanked. Last Halloween, pet owners were projected to spend $370 million on their pets' Halloween costumes?a 40 percent increase from 2010.

Several factors account for the rise in pet spending: Americans have a third fewer friends than they did 20 years ago and the number of Americans living alone?one in seven?is at an all-time high. These trends partly explain why about four in five animal owners think of their pets as children, and 58 percent even call themselves the "mommy" or "daddy" of their pets.

This higher status of pets in the eyes of their owners has even resulted in one million dogs being named beneficiaries in their owners' wills.

Tip: Be realistic about how much your pet costs, and be sure to budget for any extra splurges or treats. As for whether to name your beloved pet in your will?that depends on what you think of its money-managing skills.

Gyms
No industry plays on the chasm between what we do and what we wish we did better than the $21 billion fitness club industry. At the beginning of a fitness push, we are all too happy to hand over a hefty membership fee and sign a yearlong contract, hoping the sunk cost will encourage us to create whole new selves.

But the reality is that 67 percent of people with gym memberships never use them. Even those who go to the gym regularly are paying a lot more than they imagined: A University of California, Berkeley study showed that people who signed up for a monthly gym membership ended up paying 70 percent more than they could have paid on a pay-per-visit plan available at the same club.

The reason? ?Overconfidence about future self-control,? say the researchers. In other words: Delusion.

Tip: If this is you, find out the best workouts for you and your budget. Even if you do use the gym, make sure you're getting the best deal possible: comparison shop, use a competitor's price to get a deal at your preferred gym, or sign up for a yearlong membership to get the best possible rate.

Health and diet food
In 2011, the market for vitamins and supplements was $28 billion?despite a lack of solid research proving their effectiveness. In fact, most of our food is fortified with nutrients, so once-common deficiency diseases are now rare. Most researchers say that unless you're pregnant or elderly or have an identified deficiency, you don't need supplements and that a balanced diet is the best source of nutrients.

As for the weight-loss market, which in 2010 was worth $60 billion, several studies show that dieting actually consistently correlates with future weight gain.

Tip: If you're a sucker for vitamins and supplements, don't pay a premium for packaged foods making health claims; eat these superfoods instead. And if you think your ticket to weight loss is a diet program, consider preparing meals from fresh, whole ingredients and setting up a regular exercise routine to do it on your own instead.

Electronics rebates and warranties
Electronics stores often advertise a new gadget?s price as though you already received all the mail-in rebates. But a Consumer Reports survey found that fewer than half of people always or often cash in on rebate offers, and a full quarter never do. Even among those who sent in for their rebates, 21 percent said they never received them.

Additionally, extended warranties and insurance plans for smartphones sound so sensible. But they're almost never a good deal, consumer advocates warn. The extended warranty business itself generates $15 billion a year of almost pure profit, playing on our innate urge to avoid losses even if we could financially afford to replace the object.

And consider this: By the time the manufacturer's warranty ends on your phone, laptop or other high-tech gizmo, you'll probably want to upgrade to a newer model or the replacement price will have dropped, making the extended warranty moot.

Tip: Before you rush to take advantage of a deal you can only get with rebates, ask yourself: Are you going to fill in and mail every form?

And next time the cashier asks you if you want to pay 10 to 50 percent extra for an extended warranty, just say no.

Clothes
According to a recent survey, a woman owns 22 garments she never wears.

And that adds up: Americans spend $331 billion a year on clothing (which works out to $1,100 per person a year). While every once in a while we all really do need a new item of clothing, you could probably easily identify a number of pieces in your closet that you never wear?and they probably add up to a lot of wasted dollars.

How does this happen? We tend to invest in the same items over and over (whether ten black sweaters or a dozen flirty sundresses). Another problem: We buy for the life we want to have?cocktail dresses for parties we never go to or fancy new workout clothes for the gym we never visit.

Rep. Don Young Apologizes for 'Wetbacks' Comment

Rep. Don Young, who used the term "wetbacks" to describe Mexican immigrants in a radio interview Thursday night, issued a full-scale apology this afternoon for using the derogatory slur after a barrage of criticism from Republicans and Democrats.

"I apologize for the insensitive term I used during an interview in Ketchikan, Alaska," Young, R-Alaska, wrote in his second statement of the past 24 hours. "There was no malice in my heart or intent to offend; it was a poor choice of words."

An earlier statement from Young excused his use of the smear as "a term that was commonly used" during his days growing up on his father's ranch in central California, but the 21-term congressman's second statement leaves no ambiguity about his remorse.

"That word [wetbacks], and the negative attitudes that come with it, should be left in the 20th century, and I'm sorry that this has shifted our focus away from comprehensive immigration reform," he stated.

Numerous lawmakers decried Young's short-lived defense earlier today, including House Speaker John Boehner, who said the remarks "were offensive and beneath the dignity" of the House. Boehner had called on Young to issue "an immediate apology."

Mike Anderson, Young's press secretary, said that the congressman is traveling in Alaska today and is not available for further comment.

Iraq rejects $4B Egypt request, talks ongoing

BAGHDAD (AP) ? An Iraqi official says Baghdad has rejected a request from Egypt for a $4 billion bond to be deposited in Egypt's central bank to bolster its faltering economy.

The official said on Friday that it's "too risky" to deposit such a large sum in Egypt but that talks are continuing for a smaller amount. The official didn't elaborate. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to talk to the media.

In Egypt, the presidency's media office confirmed in a statement to The Associated Press that discussions with Iraq are ongoing.

Egypt's planning minister, Ashraf el-Araby, visited Iraq this week.

Egypt has sought help from several oil-wealthy Arab countries to shore up reserves in its central bank, which were depleted in the aftermath of Hosni Mubarak's 2011 ouster.

British ex-policeman, prison officer jailed in hacking case

LONDON (Reuters) - Two former policemen and an ex-prison officer were jailed on Wednesday for selling stories to Rupert Murdoch's tabloid the Sun, Britain's top-selling newspaper.

The three men were convicted as part of a wide-ranging police investigation begun two years ago into claims journalists from Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World newspaper had hacked into mobile phone voicemail messages.

That inquiry has led to dozens of arrests of current and former staff at News International, the British newspaper arm of Murdoch's News Corp., and has been widened to examine claims of illegal payments to public officials.

The long-running scandal forced the closure of the News of the World and has called into question the judgment of Prime Minister David Cameron, who was friends with several of Murdoch's senior executives.

Richard Trunkfield, 31, who worked at a high-security prison in central England, gave information to the Sun about Jon Venables, who was aged 10 when he and another child killed a toddler in 1993 in one of the most infamous murders in Britain in recent times.

The prison officer, who had contact with a Sun journalist between 10 and 15 times, receiving 3,500 pounds in the process, was handed a 16-month jail sentence at London's Southwark Crown Court.

"It is most assuredly not for individual prison officers to take it upon themselves to contact the press to reveal information about a defendant in circumstances such as those before the court today, still less to enrich themselves in the process," said the judge, Justice Adrian Fulford.

Alan Tierney, 40, an ex-police constable based in Surrey to the south of London, was paid 1,250 pounds for details of the arrest of former England football captain John Terry's mother on suspicion of shoplifting, and the arrest of Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood, who was held on suspicion of beating up his lover.

Tierney was jailed for 10 months while a second former police officer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to two years in prison. All three men had pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office.

Last month, April Casburn, 53, a senior counter-terrorism police officer, became the first person to be convicted and jailed by detectives looking into the phone-hacking claims and other related offences.

Rebekah Brooks, the former head of News International and a close confidante of Murdoch, and Cameron's former media chief Andy Coulson, are among those who have also been charged with crimes relating to the inquiries.

They are due to go on trial later this year.

Google awards $1,000 for critical fix to Chrome

Google has updated its Chrome Web browser to version number 26, patching two serious security flaws and a number of smaller ones.

For hackers, Chrome is one of the toughest Web browsers to crack, but that doesn't mean that it's perfect. Consequently, Google offers a $1,000 reward to whomever can point out major security flaws.

One Finnish code expert earned his share recently by pointing out a huge vulnerability in Chrome's audio systems, one of the two serious flaws patched by Tuesday's update.

Google will not divulge exactly how the security flaw worked until it has finished distributing patches to the majority of Chrome users. The issue involved the "use-after-free" functionality of Chrome's Web audio player.

Use-after-free refers to how a program allocates digital memory after finishing its task. For example, playing a song in Chrome requires a certain amount of system resources.

After the song's completion, those resources have to migrate elsewhere in the browser. By taking advantage of this newly freed memory, a hacker could introduce any number of malicious bits of code.

Atte Kettunen, the code expert who found the flaw, is a security expert based in Finland, and will receive $1,000 for his contribution to keeping Chrome safe.

Google offers the same prize to anyone who can find a major flaw in its popular, lightweight browser, although Kettunen was the only one who earned the honor this time around.

Google gave other vulnerabilities lower priority, or used its internal employees to find them (the $1,000 reward only applies to outsiders). The only other high-priority fix involves a potential data leakage between multiple tabs, while less likely candidates included oddities in Chrome's dev tools and its HTML processing. Chrome updates automatically for Windows users; Mac and Linux users have to update manually.

If you want the update right now, it's quite simple to acquire. Select "About Google Chrome" in the program's main menu, and it will automatically search for, download and apply the update for version 26.

Remember: If you find a security flaw in the new version, don't keep it to yourself. There could be $1,000 in it for you.

Powerball jackpot winner owes $29,000 in child support -sheriff

(Reuters) - The winner of one of the biggest Powerball jackpots of all time owes $29,000 in overdue child support payments, the Passaic County, New Jersey, sheriff's office said on Thursday.

Pedro Quezada, 44, a county resident who is married and the father of five children ages 5 to 23, was the sole winner of a $338 million jackpot on Saturday.

Because he chose the lump sum option, instead of annual payments over 30 years, he will actually receive $211 million, lottery officials said on Thursday. Officials said that is the third-largest lump sum payment in Powerball history.

The lottery will take out a total of 28 percent in federal and state taxes, which would leave Quezada, who until this week was the owner of a bodega in Passaic, New Jersey, with about $152 million.

His Apple Deli & Grocery now has a "for sale" sign on the door. Quezada told reporters on Tuesday that the business is now closed.

Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik said in a statement that his office is attempting to notify Quezada about the support payment. He said that generally the state's lottery division would pay the judgment out of the winnings.

"Like everyone else, until this warrant is satisfied, Mr. Quezada is subject to potential arrest," the statement said.

The child support issue dates back to 2009, according to local media reports.

Quezada could not be reached for comment.

Ind. school voucher ruling could influence others

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? The Indiana Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the nation's broadest school voucher program in a ruling supporters say could set a national precedent as other states look to build or expand programs that use public money to allow students to attend private schools.

The state's highest court unanimously upheld a 2011 law providing vouchers for low- and middle-income families and cleared the way for an expansion being debated in the Indiana Statehouse. But more importantly, it could settle the case law for other states where voucher programs face legal challenges, supporters contend.

"I think it will be incredibly influential," said Bert Gall, senior attorney for the Washington-based Institute for Justice, who helped defend the Indiana law.

The Indiana voucher program, passed by the Legislature in 2011, is the most sweeping in the nation and the biggest test yet of the conservative Republican idea that giving families choice creates a greater incentive for public schools to improve. Unlike voucher programs in other states, which are limited to poor families and failing school districts, the Indiana program is open to a much broader range of people, including parents with household incomes of up to nearly $64,000 for a family of four.

Jeff Reed, spokesman for the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, said 530,000 Indiana students qualify for vouchers, although only 9,000 currently receive them. Public school officials fear the eventual loss of thousands of students, especially those from the middle class, along with the state money that comes with them.

The Milwaukee Parental Choice Program is the nation's largest in terms of actual enrollment. That program, enacted in 1990, had 24,027 participants this school year, Reed said.

The U.S. Supreme Court kicked the fight over school vouchers to the states in a split 2002 ruling, in which conservative members led by then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist said vouchers do not violate the U.S. Constitution's clause separating church and state. That left supporters and opponents to fight over whether school voucher laws violated similar clauses in state constitutions.

Indiana joins states like Louisiana and Wisconsin, where voucher or voucher-style laws have been upheld. But Arizona and Florida's courts have ruled against vouchers, and the issue remains to be resolved in other states.

Supporters say the Indiana ruling could influence courts in other states because the Indiana constitution contains a clause copied by many states in the mid-1800s in an effort to bar public aid for Catholic schools. The so-called "Blaine Amendment" was meant at the time to keep public money flowing to Protestant-dominated public schools.

That means the Indiana ruling could apply anywhere with a "Blaine" law, Gall said.

"For us, and for the Indiana Supreme Court, the Blaine Amendment in Indiana basically prevented spending for the benefit of religious institutions. And the Indiana Supreme Court said 'No, this is spending for the benefit of parents and students,'" he said.

Opponents downplayed Tuesday's ruling. Brenda Pike, executive director of the Indiana State Teachers Association and a lead plaintiff in the case, said the group now considers vouchers settled law in Indiana. But, she added, Indiana's borders are where the ruling's impact ends.

"This was a specific Indiana constitutional law question," Pike said. "We went through the court system in Indiana, not any federal court system."

Lawyers for national groups who argued against the Indiana law deferred questions to ISTA on Tuesday.

Solicitor General Thomas Fisher, who defended the law before the state Supreme Court in November, told the justices then that parents were free to send their children to any school they wished, public or private, religious or not.

The court agreed with that, saying in a 22-page opinion written by Chief Justice Brent Dickson that the program primarily benefited parents, not schools, because it gave parents the choice in their children's education.

Dickson also rejected school voucher opponents' claims that the state constitution requires a public school system, saying lawmakers have broad discretion in how children are educated.

State School Superintendent Glenda Ritz joined the lawsuit while campaigning last year but removed her name from the list of plaintiffs shortly after winning office.

"As State Superintendent, I will follow the court's ruling and faithfully administer Indiana's voucher program," she said in a statement. "However, I personally believe that public dollars should go to public schools, and I encourage Hoosiers to send that message to their representatives in the Statehouse."

There is still some question about how popular the vouchers are in Indiana. Voters elected Ritz over former Republican Schools Superintendent Tony Bennett, long the state's most visible supporter of vouchers. But they also awarded a supermajority to House Republicans, who have pushed for a sweeping expansion of vouchers this year.

The expansion bill is awaiting action in the state Senate, where there have been concerns about its cost and whether the Legislature should start making exceptions to the 2011 compromise that then-Gov. Mitch Daniels touted as giving public schools a chance to win over students and parents.

Soccer-Vilanova to ease himself back in after returning home

BARCELONA, March 26 (Reuters) - Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova will gradually ease himself back into his job after arriving back in Spain on Tuesday following two months of cancer treatment in New York, the La Liga club said.

The 44-year-old needed a second round of surgery in December following an initial operation to remove a tumour from his saliva glands in November 2011 and his assistant Jordi Roura took charge while he relocated to the United States for a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Vilanova arrived in Barcelona early on Tuesday and returned home to rest, Barca said in a statement on their website (www.fcbarcelona.es).

Roura would take charge of Tuesday evening's training session, when most of the squad will be absent due to the international break, and Vilanova would "gradually" rejoin the first team, they added.

Brains over brawn: Why smart people are drawn to 'BioShock Infinite'

After four years of harried development, "BioShock Infinite" has finally arrived. The game faces impossibly high expectations from fans and critics alike, thanks in part to the legacy that developer Irrational Games made for itself with the original "BioShock" in 2007, not to mention the mammoth anticipation drummed up by gamers throughout the sequel?s tumultuous and secretive history.

BuzzFeed dubbed the new installment "the most important game of the last five years." Wired said that creator Ken Levine?s work on "BioShock Infinite" might finally prove to the medium?s skeptics that "a videogame [can] become an influential cultural artifact." And now that the game is out, NBC News? own Todd Kenreck calls it "a masterpiece."

It's not the first time a game has been labeled a work of art. "Ico" and "Shadow of the Colossus" were released to universal acclaim years before "BioShock" saw the light of day. But at the moment, "BioShock Infinite" has captured the hearts and gamepads of the entire gaming nation. So what is it about it that gamers find particularly intriguing?

Much of this acclaim is thanks to the famously sequel-averse Levine himself, who brings a quirky kind of intellectual charisma to the gaming world. "BioShock Infinite" tackles political and social problems with an unflinching, almost journalistic gaze. When I asked Levine last year about his favorite characters from "Infinite," he started comparing Cornelius Slate, a former captain of the U.S. military who confronts the protagonist Booker DeWitt early in the new game, to Pat Tillman, the pro football player turned soldier who was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2004.

Rather than rattle off features and specs of his new game, Levine prefers to dig into the intricacies of 20th-century American or European intellectual history. The city of Columbia was built around fierce ideals of American exceptionalism, and "BioShock Infinite" casts the white supremacist underpinnings of much of this ideology into sharp relief.

The player picks up audio recordings throughout the game from Comstock, Columbia's founder, that opine with unsettling honesty about the white man's burden. Non-player characters sneer at Booker and ask if you "like your coffee black" when you show sympathy to African-American characters, and one character jokes about being "half a Jew when it comes to silver." Games ? even ones with a far more obvious debt to realism than "Infinite" ? have never been this courageous when it comes to broaching the reality of race and class.

Levine openly sold the original "BioShock" not as a steampunk horror game that gives players magical superpowers (which it is) but as a critique of Ayn Rand's philosophy of objectivism. In a genre that spends most of its time and money showing players all the ways they can shoot terrorists, that alone could have been enough to turn Levine into an industry icon.

What's weirder about the series' success is that many gamers felt that the first installment wasn't all that great for a first-person shooter. Even a stalwart gaming publication like Edge Magazine admitted in a recent write-up of "Infinite" that Irrational never truly mastered the art of making solid guns that are fun to use.

Although our review of "BioShock Infinite" shows that the gameplay really has improved, the focus on story over software extends all the way to back to Ken Levine?s cyber-punk "BioShock" predecessor "System Shock 2," a game that was more of a role-playing game than a full-fledged shooter.

Even fans of "System Shock 2" admit that that game had abysmal graphics when it was first released in 1999. But everyone who has played it will tell you it's the scariest game they've ever experienced. No matter how flat and polygonal the zombies looked, I still remember cowering in the smallest closet spaces I could find in the Von Braun spaceship, desperately searching for some respite as these monsters continued to relentlessly taunt me.

What "System Shock 2" and "BioShock" always had that no other first-person shooter has ever captured quite as masterfully is what Levine calls a sense of "place." Shooting mechanics aside, these games always felt like living, breathing worlds, rather than simply hollow bits of code in which players could do some target practice. Without that, I would have stopped searching for a place to hide in "System Shock," and just stopped playing the game.

Activists to BRICS: Press Syria for access

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Human rights activists from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are appealing to their leaders to use their influence to press Syria to allow unimpeded humanitarian access to U.N. agencies.

Camila Asano of Brazil's Conectas says it is "a responsibility" for leaders of a BRICS summit starting Tuesday in South Africa to act to protect Syrian civilians.

Human Rights Watch director Jan Egeland wrote separately that it is "time for BRICS to stop sitting on the fence over Syria's atrocities."

BRICS countries oppose foreign intervention in Syria and accuse the West of forcing regime change. Russia, China and South Africa have vetoed U.N. Security Council resolutions on Syria.

The U.N. estimates some 70,000 people have been killed since Syria's civil war began with peaceful protests two years ago.

It's worth noting that Windows Blue isn't Windows 9. Nor is it an overhauled version of Windows 8. Instead, it's a rejiggering, a tweaking, a refining of the original Windows 8 OS. Among the updates: More color options and the ability to better?organize, resize, and customize tiles. Multitasking will be easier with Windows Blue, says WinBeta, as will managing gads of desktop traffic.?

"The biggest changes are really in the settings part of the Start Screen," Tom Warren of The Verge recently wrote. "Users can now access new networking and apps sections that provide access to additional options not available in Windows 8. Networking lets you switch connections on and off, and there's a quick way to add VPN settings too. In the new Apps section you can view how much storage apps are taking up and also take control of when notifications are shown thanks to a new quiet mode."?

Windows 8 sales were steady if slightly underwhelming through the holiday shopping season ? more recently, Information Week reported that Windows 8 sales seemed to be "stalled." Will Windows Blue bring attention back to the platform in the longterm? Unclear. But over at?Beta News, Joe Wilcox argues that at the very least, Blue represents a positive development for Microsoft, which is finally speeding up its OS development cycle.?

"[The] situation is this: Google cranks out new Android, Chrome and Chrome OS updates at frenetic pace, along with a plethora of supporting services," Wilcox writes. "Meanwhile, Microsoft development, by comparison, is more like IBM at the end of the mainframe era set against the PC. Microsoft really, really,?really?needs to pick up the pace."?

Interestingly, WebProNews believes Windows Blue will ship with Internet Explorer 11 ? a good reason, in of itself, to upgrade. Launch date of Windows Blue is unclear, but we'd put our money on the early fall ? more or less a full year after the initial release of Windows 8.?

Clean electricity from bacteria? Researchers make breakthrough in race to create 'bio-batteries'

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Scientists at the University of East Anglia have made an important breakthrough in the quest to generate clean electricity from bacteria.

Findings published today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) show that proteins on the surface of bacteria can produce an electric current by simply touching a mineral surface.

The research shows that it is possible for bacteria to lie directly on the surface of a metal or mineral and transfer electrical charge through their cell membranes. This means that it is possible to 'tether' bacteria directly to electrodes -- bringing scientists a step closer to creating efficient microbial fuel cells or 'bio-batteries'.

The team collaborated with researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington State in the US.?

Shewanella oneidensis is part of a family of marine bacteria. The research team created a synthetic version of this bacteria using just the proteins thought to shuttle the electrons from the inside of the microbe to the rock.

They inserted these proteins into the lipid layers of vesicles, which are small capsules of lipid membranes such as the ones that make up a bacterial membrane. Then they tested how well electrons travelled between an electron donor on the inside and an iron-bearing mineral on the outside.

Lead researcher Dr Tom Clarke from UEA's school of Biological Sciences said: "We knew that bacteria can transfer electricity into metals and minerals, and that the interaction depends on special proteins on the surface of the bacteria. But it was not been clear whether these proteins do this directly or indirectly though an unknown mediator in the environment.

"Our research shows that these proteins can directly 'touch' the mineral surface and produce an electric current, meaning that is possible for the bacteria to lie on the surface of a metal or mineral and conduct electricity through their cell membranes.

"This is the first time that we have been able to actually look at how the components of a bacterial cell membrane are able to interact with different substances, and understand how differences in metal and mineral interactions can occur on the surface of a cell.

"These bacteria show great potential as microbial fuel cells, where electricity can be generated from the breakdown of domestic or agricultural waste products.

"Another possibility is to use these bacteria as miniature factories on the surface of an electrode, where chemicals reactions take place inside the cell using electrical power supplied by the electrode through these proteins."

Biochemist Liang Shi of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory said: "We developed a unique system so we could mimic electron transfer like it happens in cells. The electron transfer rate we measured was unbelievably fast -- it was fast enough to support bacterial respiration."

The finding is also important for understanding how carbon works its way through the atmosphere, land and oceans.

"When organic matter is involved in reducing iron, it releases carbon dioxide and water. And when iron is used as an energy source, bacteria incorporate carbon dioxide into food. If we understand electron transfer, we can learn how bacteria controls the carbon cycle," said Shi.

The project was funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the US Department of Energy.

Google's Global Impact Challenge Will Award $3M To 4 UK Social Entrepreneurs, With Tim Berners-Lee And Richard Branson Among The Judges

Google, the world's largest search engine and one of the most powerful tech companies around, is now using its muscle to search for something new: social entrepreneurs. Today, the company is announcing the Global Impact Challenge, a new prize that will award ?2 million ($3 million) between four non-profit startups based in the UK that are using technology for social good in areas like education, economic development, health, environment and community service. Judges for the award include Tim Berners-Lee, Richard Branson, and we the people via a public vote. If successful, the prize could serve as a template for future social enterprise competitions in other countries.
