elliott - Mason mom inspired by daughter's strength | Cancer Kick

Mason resident Christine Lothrop volunteers for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society for a very personal reason.

In 2008, Lothrop got the news that her daughter had cancer. Liz, a Mason Middle School eighth grader at the time, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

So began the difficult two-and-a-half year battle of Liz?s life. It included chemotherapy and radiation treatments that left her bald and bedridden for days, bone marrow aspirations and doctor appointments. She worked hard to keep up with her school work during the brief windows of time when she was well enough to do so.

?Liz looks at the glass more than half full, ? said Lothrop. ?Most kids on that [oncology] floor at the hospital have that disposition. It?s called fighting for your life.?

Thankfully, things are looking good for Liz these days. However, no one with blood cancer is ever considered completely ?cured? of the disease.

?That?s why I?m still doing all of the fundraising,? said Lothrop. ?It [the cancer] is like a sleeping giant in there. It?s still in there, but hopefully it will stay sleeping for a long time.?

What she does: ?I work on the Light the Night event for LLS,? said Lothrop. ?The Mason walk is Sept. 27 at the Mason Municipal Campus. I love this event because it is the only one that the cancer patients themselves can participate in (with LLS).?

She also spearheaded a local event now in its second year called Blazin? with Love. The event features a 5k walk/run and cornhole tournament that honors local blood cancer patients.

The most satisfying thing about volunteering: ?Knowing that I am making a difference and trying to save lives and giving to someone who can?t give for themselves because they are too sick.?

Qualifications to get involved with this group: ?All you need is passion, drive, determination and a heart to help.?

How does someone get involved? Anyone interested in volunteering or participating in the Blazin? with Love event can visit http://blazinwithlove5k.wix.com/event. For info on the Mason Light the Night event, visit http://pages.lightthenight.org/soh/mason12/christinelothrop. Gold nanoparticles could treat prostate cancer with fewer side effects than chemotherapy
(Nanowerk News) Using a compound in tea that is attracted to prostate tumor cells, researchers at the University of Missouri have developed a radioactive gold nanoparticle that kills prostate tumors, without triggering common side effects of prostate cancer therapy.
?When we combined the tea compound with radioactive gold nanoparticles, the tea compound helped deliver the nanoparticles to the site of the tumors and the nanoparticles destroyed the tumor cells very efficiently,? explained Kattesh Katti, who led the study. Dr. Katti and his colleagues published their work in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ("Laminin receptor specific therapeutic gold nanoparticles (198AuNP-EGCg) show efficacy in treating prostate cancer").
Today, doctors often treat prostate cancer by injecting hundreds of radioactive seeds into the prostate. However, that treatment is not effective when treating an aggressive form of prostate cancer. The size of the seeds and their inability to deliver effective doses hampers their ability to stop this aggressive form of prostate cancer. Dr. Katti and his colleagues solved this problem by using radioactive gold nanoparticles that require one or two injections.
One key component to this research was the discovery that epigallocatechin gallate, a compound in tea, has a particular affinity for prostate cancer cells. The other key component was the discovery that gold nanoparticles of just the right size will stay inside tumors once they reach their target. Radioactive gold was used because of its short half-life ? all of it is decayed within three weeks of administration, an optimal time period for this type of radiotherapy.
Tests in mice showed that nearly three-quarters of the nanoparticles remained trapped in the prostate gland after injection into the tumor. Four weeks after injection, the average reduction in tumor volume was approximately 80 percent. Based on the results of these initial tests, the investigators plan larger preclinical studies with an eye on testing this formulation in human clinical trials.

?Let's talk about death?? article in Honolulu Star Advertiser ? No ...

The Star Advertiser wrote an article about my work discussing death and my new book. I have shared a copy of the article below in this post, or you can view the original article at the Star Advertiser website?(requires an account to access).

Many people wouldn?t consider death suitable kitchen table conversation.

Lani Leary would.

For more than 25 years, the Kane?ohe psychotherapist, grief counselor and consultant has been helping others die with grace and dignity, and ? more to the point ? helping their loved ones realize it is part of love to aid in the inevitable goodbye.

The author of a new book, ?No One Has to Die Alone: Preparing for a Meaningful Death? (Simon & Schuster/Atria Books, $15), believes firmly we shouldn?t wait until death is imminent to discuss it with our spouses, our partners, our parents, our children and certainly with the professionals who can attend to the business and legal matters that must be handled in advance if the wishes of the individual are to be carried out and respected.

With children, especially, Leary said, death should be on the table ? in age-appropriate language ? just as, in good parenting, drugs, sex, bullying, relationships, college and careers should be discussed, because death is the one absolute certainty in our lives.

There is time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s National Vital Statistic Reports show most of us will not die unexpectedly; 90 percent of Americans die of an illness of some length.

Leary has been a witness at more than 500 deathbeds. ?The book?s title is meant to acknowledge that the greatest fear of the dying is not their imminent death, not even their pain. Their greatest fear is being alone,? she said. ?We can be their companions in this.?

Another factor is distance. Older people in America rarely live in a family home. There is little opportunity for them to tell their stories, to say whatever they might wish to say or do, to just be there and watch life go on around them. Instead, if they can afford it, they buy a funeral plan.

It concerns Leary that we have given over the whole matter of death to the funeral industry.

?We are a culture so youth-oriented that to us, aging is weakness, something to be put away. We have no experience with it. We do not watch it,? she said.

There is no time with the body, no laying out, no period of memory and mourning that is not clothed in solemnity and ? well, Leary would say, pretense.

We?re not allowed to wail. We?re lucky if we?re allowed ?a minute alone.?

Today she has the skills, the training, the competence she didn?t have when a seminal incident changed her own life and, in effect, put her on her career path.

As a young girl, when she lost her mother at the age of 13, she never got that opportunity.

She recalls an ordinary day when her mother, perhaps anticipating the end, not feeling well, turned to her out of the blue and said, ?I love you so much.? Leary responded with the feigned indifference of an adolescent. A few days later her mother was hospitalized suddenly.

Leary never saw or spoke to her again. She knew nothing about what happened ? it was a rare disease of the immune system called Guillain-Barre syndrome ? and was never allowed to go to the hospital.

Later she dared not approach her father in his own overwhelming grief.

?The greatest act of kindness and compassion would have been for someone to ask me, ?What do you need to know?? But no one did. People didn?t explain death to children. They thought, like the English, ?least said, soonest mended.??

She held these things in her heart. And years later, after years of study and caregiving, Leary was able to do for her cancer-stricken father what she had been unable to do for her mother: to be there, to ask him what he wanted and needed, to provide all she could.

She closed her practice on the mainland to be here in Hawaii with him to the end. It is, she said, an unexpectedly rewarding experience. ?When we have done all we could, we have less guilt, less regret. It doesn?t mean we won?t be sad, but we will know that we have done what we could do,? she said.

She is a great believer in the use of hospice services to keep the dying in their homes and manage their pain, with professionals there to answer the family?s questions and with the person?s desires respected.

But isn?t it hard to bring up this taboo subject? What if Mom thinks you?re trying to get rid of her? What if Dad doesn?t know what he wants?

Knowledge is power, said Leary.

The book summarizes what she learned from the thousands of dying patients she worked with, what she wished she had known before her mother died. It encourages readers to be brave and proactive about their own death arrangements, not to fear death, but to embrace it as one of the experiences of life.

In summary, she said, ?I fully believe that enhancing the quality of a person?s death enhances the quality of our life. I believe that those who engage and participate in the death of their loved ones experience their grief in a softer way than those who, for whatever reason, do not participate. Participation and service heal all of us at the deepest emotional level.?

Iraq summons Turkey envoy to protest over visit

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq made a formal protest to Turkey's envoy in Baghdad on Friday after the Turkish foreign minister made a surprise visit to an oil-rich Iraqi city claimed by both the central government and the country's autonomous Kurdistan region.

The episode, the latest in a series of diplomatic spats and tit-for-tat summonings of envoys between the neighboring countries, is likely to worsen already strained relations.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had travelled to Kirkuk on Thursday after visiting the regional president in Arbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.

But Iraq's foreign ministry accused Turkey of violating its constitution with the visit, saying that Davutoglu had neither asked for nor obtained permission to enter Kirkuk.

A junior minister at Iraq's foreign ministry had handed Turkey's charge d'affaires a protest letter on Friday, a strongly-worded statement from the foreign ministry said.

"The note also included a demand by the Iraqi government (for an) urgent explanation from the Turkish government," it added.

Relations between Iraq, close to Shi'ite Iran, and Sunni Muslim regional power Turkey, were tested after U.S. troops pulled out of Iraq last year and the government immediately tried to arrest one of its Sunni vice presidents.

He fled first to Kurdistan and later to Ankara, where he was given refuge.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan then traded public insults.

Baghdad's Arab-led central government and ethnic Kurdish officials are locked in a protracted dispute over who controls territory and oilfields along their internal border. Kirkuk, which possesses huge crude oil reserves, is one of those areas.

Iraq and Turkey are also at odds over the worsening conflict in Syria. Turkey has become one of the main backers of the rebels, while Baghdad has refused to support calls for President Bashar al-Assad to step aside.

Iraq is Turkey's second largest trading partner after Germany with trade reaching $12 billion last year, more than half of which was with the Kurdish region.
