Low-dose vitamin D may not prevent fractures in healthy women ?- what about higher doses?
ScienceDaily (June 16, 2012) ? Vitamin D and calcium are dietary requirements, but it's unclear how much is best for us. New draft findings by the United States Preventive Services Task Force conclude that for healthy, postmenopausal women, daily supplementation with low levels of vitamin D -- up to 400 international units -- combined with 1,000 milligrams of calcium, does not reduce fracture risk.
However, this amount of supplementation is associated with a small but significantly increased likelihood of developing painful kidney stones, according to the task force.
Because relatively few, high quality studies have been done, the task force was unable to draw conclusions about the fracture-preventing merits of supplementation in healthy men and in premenopausal women.
Nor did studies offer conclusive evidence regarding vitamin D and cancer prevention, according to the task force. Evidence also was inadequate to draw conclusions about supplementation with higher doses.
The task force did not review studies on supplementation that were focused on individuals who already had osteoporosis or vitamin D deficiencies. Nor did the task force investigate other putative benefits of vitamin D.
However the task force did previously recommend vitamin D supplementation to prevent falls among men and women age 65 and older. Falls are a major cause of hip fracture and early death among the elderly, especially among those with osteoporosis.
Vitamin D Benefits, Risks, Not Adequately Studied "We know that vitamin D and calcium are essential for a healthy diet," said task force member Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, MD, PhD, a UCSF epidemiologist and internist. "We're not making recommendations about the treatment of osteoporosis or of vitamin deficiency. We're making recommendations that apply to generally healthy women who are seeking to supplement their diets to prevent fractures."
The task force reviewed already-published studies to draw conclusions. The public comment period for the new draft recommendations runs through July 10.
To reach its recommendation that healthy, postmenopausal women not take low-dose vitamin D and calcium supplements to ward off fractures, task force members examined 16 studies in which participants took supplements. Formulations and dosages of vitamin D and calcium varied among the studies.
Among them was the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The WHI included 36,282 health postmenopausal women ages 50 to 79. As part of the study, many women were assigned to take 400 international units of vitamin D3 and 1,000 milligrams of calcium carbonate each day. Results of other studies of low-dose supplementation were consistent with WHI findings, Bibbins-Domingo said.
To prevent fracture, supplementation for healthy, postmenopausal women at low vitamin D doses, with or without calcium, "does not work," Bibbins-Domingo said, and comes with a "small but measurable risk for kidney stones."
Whether benefits outweigh risks for harm at higher supplemental doses remains unclear.
"Many women are taking higher doses of vitamin D already, and that is where there is not sufficient evidence for us to make a recommendation one way or another," Bibbins-Domingo said. The same goes for many other questions related to vitamin D in various patient groups.
"We need more research. There are not enough high-quality studies," she said.

Afghan arsonists seek to enforce truancy from school
KABUL (Reuters) - Standing at a narrow half-open school gate, two boys in school uniform conduct body searches on fellow pupils and visitors. Another two sit at a table to take down details of comings and goings in a register.
Arson and poison attacks on schools across Afghanistan, mostly against those teaching girls, have forced students to defend themselves, an extra-curricular activity imposed by the government which blames the Taliban for the violence.
Abdul Fatah, 16, takes it in turn every few weeks to stand guard all day at the entrance to Habibia High School, one of the best in Kabul.
His parents worry that if there is an attack, he will be the first to get hurt. But the only other choice is to stay at home and join tens of thousands of Afghans who have left school early and struggle to earn a living in menial jobs.
There is a police checkpoint on the road outside and each day a group of six students and a teacher patrol the grounds.
"We are on the front line," Abdul said. "If there is an attack, it will be us who get hurt. But somebody has to do the searches."
Schools have been burnt across the country, hundreds of children hospitalized after drinking contaminated water and teachers attacked, whipping up a climate of fear reminiscent of Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001. The Taliban banned education for women and girls and only allowed strict Islamic instruction.
Unidentified men threw acid on a group of 15 girls as they walked to their school in the southern city of Kandahar in November 2008 when the Taliban insurgency was rising, triggering alarm across the country. There haven't been reports of big attacks since then, but women have been wounded with acid over other issues.
Girls have been returning to school, especially in the capital, Kabul, since the overthrow of the Taliban, in one of few hard-fought gains in civil liberties.
Afghanistan's intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security, says the Taliban are bent on closing schools ahead of the withdrawal of foreign forces in 2014. Some of the attacks are carried out by Taliban members and in some cases, it says, the Taliban have used children to poison fellow pupils.
SCHOOLGIRLS ACCUSED
On Wednesday the agency said it had arrested 15 people for a spate of attacks in northern Takhar province, most of them Taliban, but also two girls who it said had been given 50,000 afghanis ($1,000) each to smuggle in toxic powder and slip it into the water tank.
One of the girls, Sima Gul, a grade 12 student, said in a video released by the agency that she had also been forced to spray poison in her classroom by a relative in the Taliban who had repeatedly followed her to school.
"He threatened to kidnap me and kill me if I didn't do this," she said, her voice breaking. "I am ashamed."
But the Taliban have denied involvement, saying the attacks, arrests and confessions are part of a propaganda campaign to blacken their reputation.
"We are not opposed to education. Why should we oppose it? Our children attend these schools. We are only against schools that propagate anti-Islamic teachings, that are opposed to Afghanistan's national sovereignty," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.
He said militia groups set up by the government were behind the violence. Others hint at external forces trying to whip up trouble as Afghanistan prepares to take responsibility for its security after nearly 11 years of international support.
Some 550 schools in 11 provinces had been closed because the state could not provide enough security, Amanullah Iman, a spokesman for the Education Ministry, said.
In the southern province of Helmand, more than half the 336 schools are shut. Last week, anonymous letters delivered at night in the southeast insurgent stronghold of Paktika warned children and teachers of punishment if they attended school.
The closures have left about 200,000 children, mostly girls, without any access to education, and strengthened fears that Afghanistan's fledgling national forces may be unable to preserve women's rights once international forces leave.
"Over the last two years, the Taliban have moved away from large set-piece combat maneuvers and focused more on intimidation and social and political control," said Joshua Foust, an expert on Afghanistan and Central Asia at the Washington-based American Security Project.
"Shutting down schools is one way of establishing control."
LATE FOR SCHOOL
Alarmed by four poison attacks over the last two months on girls' schools, authorities in northern Takhar province last week ordered headmasters to remain in school until late in the evening and staff to scour the grounds for suspicious objects and test the water before opening the school gates.
Girls go to school in groups of five to ten seeking safety in numbers. Some don't dare to take in food or water in case someone poisons it, said Hamida, who is 19 but still in high school because of so many stops and starts to her education.
"To be honest, we are very scared each day. If you see someone staring at you on the way to school, you know there can be trouble," she said.
Sometimes the children simply turn back for home, fearing an attack.
Takhar was transferred to Afghan government control in April as part of a gradual transition. NATO said security had improved and Afghan forces were capable of shouldering responsibility.
But renewed violence across the nation as part of the Taliban's spring offensive has stoked fear that the poorly equipped Afghan forces may struggle to establish control.
Takhar has been a hotbed of militancy and criminal activity since 2009. It's not just the Taliban but also small ethnic insurgent groups such as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan that are active.
Even in the best of times, NATO barely managed to keep the lid on the tension within the province, officials say. The risks have risen even more now that the reins have been handed to the Afghan army.
"Now that it's under Afghan control, we're seeing what I expect we'll see in a lot of places: all the many armed groups vying for control," Foust said.
"Someone will eventually come out on top if they're left to their own devices ... it just might not be someone we'd prefer."

Spain could ask for bank bailout this weekend
MADRID (AP) ? Spain could ask for a rescue of its struggling banks this weekend when European finance ministers hold an emergency conference call Saturday to discuss the country's financial problems, a move that would make it the fourth member of the 17-nation eurozone to seek outside help since the continent's debt crisis erupted two years ago.
The ministers will discuss a potential rescue package for Spain as pressure mounted on the country to prop up the banks hurt by toxic assets after a property boom went bust.
A new report from the International Monetary Fund estimated Spanish banks need a recapitalization injection of at least ?40 billion ($50 billion) following a stress test it performed on the country's financial sector. That report came out early Saturday, three days ahead of schedule, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Spain, as of early Saturday afternoon, had not asked for help, "but we want to prepare if the call comes," said Guy Schuller, a spokesman for Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs the meetings of eurozone finance ministers. Spanish officials neither confirmed nor denied a request for a bailout was imminent
A phone call among senior officials Saturday morning meant to prepare the finance ministers' call ended without a formal request from Spain, an EU official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.
Spain's Development Minister, Ana Pastor, did not tell reporters Saturday whether the country would ask for a bailout but said: "What we're working on at the moment is the recapitalization of the financial entities that need it, nothing else."
While Spain has said it is waiting for two independent audits ? due by June 21 ? before requesting a bailout, pressure is mounting on the country to act faster.
"The solution will have to be found quickly," Juncker told German public radio station Deutschlandradio.
In an interview published Saturday, the head of Germany's central bank, Jens Weidmann, called on Spain to tap Europe's bailout fund, the EFSF, to prop up its banks.
"If Spain is overwhelmed by the financing need, it should use the instruments created for that case," he was quoted as telling Germany's Welt am Sonntag paper. "The motto cannot be to avoid using the rescue fund at all costs."
If it does request a bailout, Spain would become the fourth eurozone country to do so since the continent's debt crisis touched off two years ago. The three countries that have received rescues thus far ? Greece, Ireland and Portugal ? are fairly small, and many have worried that bailing out much-larger Spain could call the entire euro project into question. Cyprus, also a small economy, could also be forced to seek a bailout soon.
While Spain's government seems fairly resigned to asking for help, the big question remains how much its banks need, with estimates ranging between the IMF's own ?40 billion to as much as ?100 billon. The size is important because the rescue, if asked for, must be big enough to make it credible but not so big that investors worry Spain won't be able to pay it back.
Investor doubts about a country's ability to maintain its debts can lead to higher borrowing costs, which in turn undermine the government's ability to finance itself. That's what pushed Greece, Ireland and Portugal to take bailouts.
But Spain itself is generally considered too big to rescue. Spain's economy is bigger than those of the three previous eurozone countries that sought bailouts combined.
Spain initially tried to get European leaders to directly funnel aid to the banks so the government wouldn't have to ask for it and suffer the stigma of being lumped in with the other countries that asked for outside help.
But Germany, Europe's paymaster, dashed that idea. So Spain is trying for a "light" form of a bailout only for its banks under a measure approved by Europe last July. That allows the European Union to lend money for the purpose of recapitalizing banks in countries not already receiving bailouts.
The rules say the money has to be funneled through the government. But conditions attached to the bailout would not have to be as over-arching as those attached to bailouts of government finances.
Spain was hit Thursday with a downgrade of its credit rating to just two notches above junk by credit rating agency Fitch, which estimated Spanish banks may need as much as ?100 billion ($124.7 billion). Then on Friday, Moody's Investor Services warned it could downgrade Spain and other countries in the eurozone.
Moody's said Spain's banking problem is largely confined to that country and not likely to spill over to other eurozone nations, with the exception of Italy ? where the European Central Bank has already stepped in to buy government bonds as a way to help lower the country's borrowing costs.
Spain has been criticized for being too slow to set out a roadmap to resolve its problem. European business leaders and analysts have stressed that Spain must find a solution quickly so that it is not caught up in any market turmoil sparked by the Greek elections on June 17. There are concerns that anti-bailout left-wing party Syriza could become the largest party in the Greek parliament, putting the country's membership in the eurozone at risk.
But others said it's more important for Spain to correctly assess how to shore up its banking system than it is to hurry into a bailout ahead of the Greek elections. The audits that Spain's government is waiting for are crucial to determining precisely how much capital the nation's troubled banks need, said Mark Miller, an analyst with Capital Economics in London.
"Any notion of rushing, that would be very unwise, in fact I think it could make things much worse," he said. "I think it's important to get it right rather than simply say that there is a rather appealing idea of a one-week window of opportunity, relative to getting a solution ahead of Greek elections."
If Spain doesn't get a request for outside help right the first time, "then you are in second bailout territory," Miller said.
Working in Spain's favor is the fact that its public debt is actually quite low, at 68.5 percent of its gross domestic product at the end of 2011.
Its debt is predicted to hit 78 percent by the end of the year, but even that figure would be below the debt-to-GDP ratios of Europe's strongest economy, Germany, which is at 82 percent.
But Spain's in its second recession in three years, with unemployment at nearly 25 percent and little hope for improvement this year. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government has imposed a wave of austerity measures since he took office in December that have raised taxes, made it cheaper to hire and fire workers and cut government funding for education and health care.

Prominent Kansas family killed in plane crash in Florida swamp
JUNCTION CITY, Kan. -- A Kansas businessman, his wife and their four children were killed Thursday when their small plane crashed into a swampy area of central Florida, and word quickly spread to their hometown where the family was known for their charitable work and always having a house full of neighborhood kids.
The single-turboprop, fixed wing plane was heading home to Junction City from the Bahamas when it broke apart and went down about 12:30 p.m. in the Tiger Creek Preserve, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office in Florida.
Deputies reached the area by helicopters, but it was clear there were no survivors, the sheriff's office said. The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known, and parts of the plane were found nearly 3 1/2 miles away, investigators said.
Ron Bramlage, a prominent businessman in Junction City who owned Roadside Ventures LLC, was piloting the 2006 Pilatus Pc-12/47. The 45-year-old, his wife, Rebecca, 43, and the couple's children -- Brandon, 15; Boston, 13; Beau, 11; and 8-year-old Roxanne -- were killed.
"It's just a horrific loss," Junction City Mayor Pat Landes said, adding that the couple supported many local projects and provided college scholarships. The family was well known in town and at Kansas State University, where the basketball arena is named for Ron Bramlage's grandfather.
At least two dozen bouquets of flowers were weaved through the black wrought-iron fence surrounding the family's ranch-style home
by Thursday evening. A trampoline sat in the front lawn, and a hammock hung between two large trees in the wooded yard.Standing in his front yard across the street, Rick Bazan said he'd been friends with Ron Bramlage since childhood. He said his friend would often help local families financially, such as paying for kids to go to wrestling camps if their parents couldn't afford to send them.
He said Rebecca, who was president of the local school board, "never stopped working. She was tireless." She would likely be embarrassed by the outpouring of sympathy now at her home, where at least a half-dozen friends of the couple's children were always running around, Bazan said.
"It's going to be a long time getting over this one," he said as he watched the family's neighbors and friends gather outside.
Bella Omann, 14, who went to middle school with the two younger boys, said Beau "was really the funniest kid I've ever met." She had an advanced geometry class with Boston, whom she said "loved reading books. We would always talk about our favorite books," including the Harry Potter novels. He read so much, she said, that their teacher wouldn't allow extra material on students' desks to keep him from reading.
Another neighbor, Joann Williams, recalled driving by the home and seeing the children bouncing on the tramp. "They were just a beautiful family. They were just so together, cohesive," she said.
The couple were graduates of Kansas State University and members of the K-State Alumni Association, President's Club, Foundation Trustees and Ahearn Fund.
"The Bramlage family holds a special place in the history of Kansas State University and K-State Athletics, and Ron and Becky have been loyal supporters and great fans of K-State. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bramlage family during this difficult time," University President Kirk Schulz and Athletics Director John Currie said in a joint statement.
Ron was the grandson of the late Fred Bramlage, a 1935 graduate of K-State and Junction City businessman. Fred Bramlage was the lead contributor to the construction of Bramlage Coliseum, a multipurpose arena that opened in 1988 and is home to the K-State men's and women's basketball teams.
A library in the city is named for Ron Bramlage's grandmother, Dorothy Bramlage.
James A. Sands, vice mayor of Junction City, said the Bramlages at one point owned the loan on the building for a local homeless shelter, and "one day, Dorothy Bramlage just said, 'Nah. It's paid off. You don't owe any more.'"
The 4,900-acre Tiger Wood Preserve about 50 miles southwest of Orlando contains hardwood swamps, hammocks, scrubby flatwoods, pine flatwoods, sandhill and longleaf pine/wiregrass habitat, according to its website.
The crash site was only reachable by helicopters and all-terrain vehicles. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation, which the Federal Aviation Administration said would take a long time. The family had stopped for customs in Fort Pierce, Fla., and had taken off a half-hour before the crash.

Galaxy S III changes pin layout, incompatible with previous MHL adapters
If you've pre-ordered a Galaxy S III and can't wait to see its display mirrored to the silver screen, add one more thing to that pre-launch shopping list: a new MHL dongle. According to UK retailer Clove, a change in the phone's connector pins renders it incompatible with previous Samsung-made adapters. Sammy's new microUSB-powered connector supports 1080p output via HDMI -- though it reportedly doesn't play nicely with 720p displays -- and rings up at $40 on Amazon. Mosey past the break for a video unboxing of the dongle.

Brian Presley Denies Hitting on Melissa Steffen, Responds to Viral Twitter Allegations
Michigan model Melissa Stetten did more than just make idle conversation with actor Brian Presley aboard a red eye flight the other night.
Stetten live Tweeted Presley's advances - his hilarious, alleged advances - and her Tweets went viral, given that he's married with a kid.
The publicly, devoutly sober Presley supposedly had three beers, too, but that's just her side of the story, and it's wrong, he claims.
On Friday, Presley, who stars in Touchback with Kurt Russell, posted a note to his Facebook page denying the entire alleged incident.
"I took a red eye flight to NY, had a 10-minute friendly conversation with the person sitting next to me, had some food, and went to sleep!"
He continued: "I learned today this person has been tweeting about me drinking beer in the airplane bathroom, and trying to commit adultery with her on the airplane."
"Really absurd and quite funny!"
"None of what this person said happened is true," Brian went on. "I guess in today's age you have to be careful who you say hello too. Sobriety, God, & My Family are the most important things in my life!"
Regardless, Stetten's in-flight narration caused quite a stir.
Throughout her series of Tweets, Stetten offered colorful commentary for thousands of followers as she seemingly rejected his advances.
According to Stetten, Presley said of his wedding ring that he "just wears the ring because he likes it," then took it off in the bathroom.
"No thanks, Brian, the actor sitting next to me on this flight talking about his role with Kurt Russell and his spiritual beliefs," she wrote.
"Brian is now talking about how he is an artist and believes everything happens for a reason, like how we're brought together on this flight."
Stetten also reported that Presley "was wasted" after consuming three beers on the flight. Among her final Tweets on the subject:
"Did I just ruin Brian Presley's life via Twitter?"
Either he doesn't think so, or he's a pretty good actor.

CT scans in kids slightly raise leukaemia risk
Children who receive multiple computerised tomography (CT) scans of the head or bone marrow have triple the risk of developing leukaemia or brain cancer compared with children who had minor scans of other parts of the body. However, the heightened risk is still low, generating just one extra leukaemia or brain cancer case per 10,000 scans.
"Our study is the first to show directly that CT scans can cause cancer later," says Amy Berrington de Gonz?lez of the US National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.
Researchers stress that CT scans are indispensible, lifesaving tools that can rapidly reveal the scale of head injuries after an accident, for example. But the latest results reinforce the message that every scan should be medically justifiable, and that other types of diagnosis that don't expose children to X-rays should be considered wherever possible.
"MRI, ultrasound, physical examination and ordinary X-rays are other options," says Mark Pearce of Newcastle University in the UK, co-leader of the research team. "The doses from ordinary X-rays are about 10 times lower."
To investigate whether the scans raise the risk of cancer, the researchers analysed the records of almost 180,000 UK patients who had received CT scans before their 22nd birthday. All of the scans were performed between 1985 and 2002, and all patients were then followed until 2008.
The "controls" in the group were those who had minor scans to their extremities, which restricted the absorbed radiation dose to the two organs of interest ? the brain and the bone marrow ? to less than 5 milligrays.
There were 74 cases of leukaemia and 135 cases of brain cancer. Those who had received cumulative doses of around 60 milligrays ? equivalent to two or three CT scans of the head ? had triple the risk of brain cancer compared with the "controls". The risk was also trebled for leukaemia.
Careful use
Pearce says that the results reinforce the need to do the scans only when they are absolutely necessary. He says that doctors in Europe do relatively few CT scans because by law there must be a medical justification for it.
This contrasts with the US, where scanning the "worried well" annually for early signs of disease has become increasingly popular.
Over the past decade, some studies have warned that the routine scans could raise the risk of cancers. Other studies have likened exposures from the routine scans to those from nuclear bombs dropped on Japan during the Second World War.
Pearce says the risks to children are known to be higher because sensitive tissues in the bone marrow and brain are still rapidly developing. "We need to study adults too, and although it's not something we're planning, it's something we'd like to do in the future," he says.
"Although our study is in children, it is supporting evidence that there's probably a risk associated with adult scans," says Berrington de Gonz?lez. "Most are offered by private companies, and there have been efforts by several health organisations to explain that there is no evidence of benefit."

PFT: Revis wants to retire as a Jet

There?s been a lot of speculation about whether Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis will hold out this summer.
In a lengthy interview with Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger, Revis said that he has never asked for a new contract and that he will try to honor his current contract ?the best way I can.? The obvious way to do that is to play under the terms of the deal, but Revis admitted that he?s looking for a multi-year extension that keeps him with the Jets for the long term.
?I want to retire here,? Revis said. ?I think Mike (Tannenbaum) knows that. I think Rex (Ryan) knows that. (The Jets) drafted me, they gave me a chance, so yeah, I want to be here and never play for another organization again. If they feel that, if Mike feels that I?m that type of person to be here, then they will compensate me. If not, then it?s the business of it.?
Revis is much more likely to get paid at this time next year. If he were to hold out, which is pretty much his only card to play other than continuing to be one of the best defensive players in football, the Jets can add three years at $3 million per onto the end of his deal. Come next year, though, Revis will be entering the final year of a deal that does not permit the Jets to use the franchise tag on Revis. Revis seems to understand that.
?I could come here every day and make a hassle, ?I want to get paid,? but if they don?t want to do that ? if Mike doesn?t want to do that ? then they don?t want to do that,? Revis said. ?It might be that way. It might be they want to do it, but they?ve got to figure out the best situation to get it done.?
Revis? best situation is obviously getting a deal done now and avoiding the possibility of an injury that would make it less desirable for the Jets next year. The Jets would be awfully silly to do that given the leverage they have over Revis at this point. That doesn?t mean it won?t happen, but all of the Revis chatter that?s popped up of late is really just an appetizer for next year. That?s when the Jets will have to sign Revis or risk losing him as a free agent after the 2013 season.

1940 NY census records searchable by name
NEW YORK?? Americans now may plug family names into an online 1940 U.S. census and come up with details about the lives of New Yorkers ? from Joe DiMaggio and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy to their own relatives.
Previously, users had to provide exact addresses from seven decades ago to look for a New York connection.
With names, free searches (with an Ancestry.com free account) of the 1940 U.S. census first made public in April unlock personal information about residents of New York ? then the largest U.S. state and an immigrant hub from which people moved all over the country.
Census experts say the New York data is of national interest because tens of millions of Americans have roots in this gateway to the United States through Ellis Island, and many can now dig for more personal information.
"That's the exciting aspect about this ? the ability to search the lifetime of our mothers and fathers," said Debra Braverman, a New York-based independent forensic genealogist with clients seeking information for trust funds and estates.
When the census was first released, "if you didn't know exactly where someone lived in 1940, you couldn't find them," Braverman said.
Indexing by name is crucial to cracking that year's census, which by law could not be released for 72 years and is therefore the most recently available one.
This U.S. census leads to China.
Some of the work of transcribing handwritten census records into a computerized index was done by workers in an office outside the southern city of Dongguan with "very strong character recognition abilities," said Todd Jensen, who heads the document preservation service at Ancestry.com, a Provo, Utah-based family history company that's releasing the online New York census for 1940 using their new name index.
"Given the complexity of their own language, reading and recognizing characters from other languages comes easier," he said.
Also Wednesday, another historic treasure trove appeared on the Internet for the first time: census information compiled separately by New York state for 1915 and 1925, indexed by name. These records include details about famed personalities such as Lauren Bacall, Al Capone, Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Houdini, who according to the 1925 census was born in the United States, even though most biographies say he was born in Hungary.
The interest in roots is so intense that 37 million hits temporarily crashed the National Archives provider site when the 1940 census was released on April 2. Many who logged on hoping for results hit the wall, frustrated for lack of specific locations required for results.

Braverman, a Manhattan resident, uncovered details about her 84-year-old father's family because he remembered his family's Brooklyn address before his bar mitzvah in 1940, when he was 13.
"His memory was spot on," his daughter said.
But the Brooklyn childhood address her mother remembered didn't match, so they will try to find the information again this week.
Former New York Mayor Ed Koch hit the jackpot when it came to his family history, which is contained in all three censuses ? the federal one, as well as the New York ones from 1915 and 1925.
The 87-year-old Koch participated in a preview search conducted by Ancestry.com, which is making all three census records available online at http://www.ancestry.com/cs/us/newyork.
He said his father came from Europe, alone at age 16, eventually raising a family in a Bronx apartment. For years, "I told people that we lived in abject poverty," he said. A series of census records from the time would prove him wrong.
They showed that the Depression-era rent for the Kochs' five-room Bronx apartment was $75 a month, "and that was a lot of money at the time," Koch said.
"All my life, I was telling people I was very poor, but I learned we did not live in abject poverty; I was born into a middle-class family," he said.
The New York world of the 1940 census includes names that later became famous, including Katharine Hepburn, John D. Rockefeller Jr., J.D. Salinger, Kennedy and Ella Fitzgerald.

The 1940 census by name index will be available for all states possibly as early as this fall.
While New York is the biggest state whose census records are already name-indexed, a number of smaller states also have been made name-accessible by Ancestry.com and two other companies, FamilySearch.org and MyHeritage.com.
New York state censuses for 1915 and 1925 are available online for the first time via a link that says "find family history for free" to anyone providing a New York ZIP code and email address.
The state censuses show "every New Yorker from the famous to the infamous to everybody in between," said Kathleen Roe, director of archives and records management at the New York State Archives.
A perfect example of this melting pot is Babe Ruth, who appeared in the 1925 census as "George H. Ruth" and listed his occupation as "Base Ballplayer." He was living by the Grand Concourse near Yankee Stadium, which would later be dubbed "The House That Ruth Built." The Ruth family neighbor was Joseph Weinstock, an Austrian immigrant working in manufacturing and his Russian-born wife, the census shows.
"So here was the future American baseball hero living next door to an immigrant family making it in the United States," Roe said. "What a great American story! And that's what you can find out walking through a neighborhood with census records."
The censuses released this week offer "one of the greatest collections of historic voices you'll ever find," said Roe, adding that if read together, they trace whole families as they move around.
The census data also include such information as occupation, whether immigrants were naturalized citizens, and whether they owned or rented their homes ? in other words, sketches of communities, said David M. Kleiman, president of Heritage Muse Inc., a New York-based genealogy technology firm.
"What we're all looking for is the story of the family ? what made my grandparents the way they were, which made my parents the way they were, which made me what I am," he said.

Mistakes To Avoid When Playing In A Casino | aUsAys.com
The biggest thing you have to understand about casinos is that they do not need to cheat to get you to part with your money. All their legal games are designed to have the odds stacked against the player. All they have to do is just have players play their game and just wait for the money to roll in. If you already know this, then you are one step closer to having a good time playing at casinos. Without that nagging doubt that you are being cheated, you would have an easier time focusing on your play especially if you are going to play games where strategies are needed.
The second thing that you have to know is that there are several mistakes that many casino gamers commit. If you want to know what these are to avoid making them, read on as we try to educate casino players.
First of all, many people who go to casinos do not have a set limit on their bankroll. If you have plenty of money to burn, you still have to set a limit before you end up burning through it in one sitting. Also, do not bring your credit cards when gambling in a casino. Sometimes, the urge to continue playing could be overwhelming which could result to you spending more than what you can afford.
Another mistake that many players commit is playing the wrong game. Sure, it could be an entertaining thing to go out there on the casino floor and try all the games they have to offer. But if you would like to finish your trip to a casino with more money that when you came in, you should only play the games you know would give you a good chance of winning. The games are not the same after all and so are the odds stacked against you.
Do not impair your judgment by drinking alcohol while at a casino. The house would love you to lose control when playing so liquors are served freely in a casino. If you are going to play games like poker where you need your wits about you, you have to stay away from drinks that would impair your decision making.
Picking the wrong casino is also another big mistake that many players commit. Some casinos offer better perks than others. Some offer better service than others. Some are not as greedy as others. To pick the right casino, you need to do your research. Ask your friends and family if they have experienced playing in a casino before.

Foursquare's no longer just about where you currently are
Foursquare is getting a snazzy redesign. On Thursday, brand-new versions of the location-based social networking service's apps are being released. What's changing? Well ... a lot. The app's basically been torn apart and rebuilt from the ground up. It no longer simply helps you share your location, but now actually guides you to new places.

Bradley Manning's Wikileaks hearing opens

U.S. Army Private Bradley Manning, right, is escorted during his arrival to military court on the first day of a three-day motion hearing Wednesday in Fort Meade, Maryland.
By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services
?
FORT MEADE, Md. ? WikiLeaks suspect Pvt. Bradley Manning appeared at a military court outside Washington on Wednesday for a three-day pretrial hearing at which his lawyers were seeking dismissal of 10 of the 22 counts against him.
Agence France Presse news agency described Manning as frail-looking while seated between two members of his defense team when the hearing got under way, after an hour-long closed door meeting between lawyers for both sides.
Manning, a 24-year-old Crescent, Okla., native, faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted of the most serious charge: aiding the enemy. He allegedly sent to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks hundreds of thousands of classified diplomatic cables and war logs downloaded from government computers while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in late 2009 and early 2010.
Motions filed by defense attorney David Coombs before the hearing said the U.S. government used "unconstitutionally vague" or "substantially overbroad" language in eight counts of their indictment, in which Manning is accused of "possession and disclosure of sensitive information."
For two other counts, in which Manning is accused of "having knowingly exceeded authorized access" to a secret Defense Department computer network, defense lawyers said the government failed to state an offense.
The defense team also asked the court to compel the government to produce material including investigation reports by the White House and House of Representatives.
One?motion?accused?the government of responding "in its typical nonsensical, smoke-and-mirrors fashion."
NBC News reported that a judge ruled that the government must give Manning's defense team a redacted version of the Defense Intelligence Agency's WikiLeaks Damage Assessment Report. The team will receive the report "almost in its entirety," as only specific classified information shall be removed, NBC News reported.

Shannon, Miami settle pay dispute
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) ? Randy Shannon will not be fighting the Miami Hurricanes in a courtroom.
The university said Tuesday that a breach-of-contract lawsuit the former Hurricanes football coach filed in late April over money he said he was denied after his firing has been settled. Financial terms of the settlement were not released, largely because Shannon's contract with the school required him to keep such details confidential.
The lawsuit was filed in Miami on April 27.
"Contract issues between the University of Miami and Randy Shannon have been fully, fairly and amicably resolved," the university said in a statement. "We are grateful for Coach Shannon's service as a player, assistant and head coach. Coach Shannon will always be a Miami Hurricane."
Shannon's attorneys and the university began working on settlement terms several weeks ago.
Shannon was fired Nov. 27, 2010 after going 28-22 in four seasons with the Hurricanes. Earlier that year, he and the school agreed on an extension that would have kept him under contract through January 2014.
In the lawsuit, Shannon said it was the university's assertion that since he was fired less than one full year after that deal went into effect, the Hurricanes could reduce the amount of money he was guaranteed. Shannon said the school was only paying him about five-sixths of what he has been owed in monthly installments, calling it an "amount overpaid."
Shannon also said the school withheld a bonus that should have been paid because Miami was selected for the 2010 Sun Bowl. Shannon was fired before the team was selected to that game and did not coach in the matchup against Notre Dame, but claimed he was entitled to the bonus because the Hurricanes were bowl-eligible based on what they did under him during the regular season.
Shannon was a linebacker for Miami in the mid-1980s before going to the NFL. The Miami native was a starter on the team that won the 1987 national championship. Shannon was a graduate assistant when the Hurricanes won another title in 1991, then was defensive coordinator when Miami won its fifth and most recent national title in 2001.
As a player, assistant coach and head coach, Shannon spent 21 years with the Hurricanes.
