Gold edged higher on Friday, helped by a drop in the U.S. dollar to one-month lows, but prices remained in a narrow range ahead of a meeting of euro zone finance ministers later in the day to discuss increasing the bloc's bailout fund.

Spot gold inched up 0.1 percent to $1,663.11 an ounce at 0950 GMT. The metal is on track for a 6 percent gain in the first three months of 2012, after posting its first quarterly drop in three years at the end of last year.

"All in all gold is still holding fairly well because the U.S. dollar weakened, which gave gold some support," said Peter Fertig, a consultant at Quantitative Commodity Research.

"Gold had a very good start and run-up until the end of February and it's now consolidating part of the gains in March."

He said in the coming weeks gold could consolidate further, with risks to the downside. "The stock markets came under pressure this week and also crude oil retreated somewhat and these have been factors which were negative for gold," he said.

Oil prices rose above $123 on Friday after falling sharply earlier in the week.

The dollar hit a one-month low against a basket of currencies on Friday, dragged down by heavy selling against sterling. A weaker dollar tends to boost gold, which is priced in the U.S. currency.

Risk appetite sharpened on Friday, with safe-haven German bunds flat, while world stocks rose as equity markets picked up gains at the end of the quarter and investors eyed a boost to the euro zone's bailout resources that ministers are expected to sign off on later in the day.

Investors expect the euro zone finance ministers' meeting later in the day to deliver an agreement on temporarily almost doubling the bloc's bailout capacity as one of the final moves to end its debt crisis.

Gold investors largely held off taking fresh positions ahead of the meeting, which may have a significant effect on the currency markets.

While euro zone worries helped drive gold to record highs last year, the metal has since re-established its usual inverse relationship with the dollar so that good news from the bloc, which boosts the euro and weighs on the dollar, tends to be positive for gold.

"In the near term, gold prices may be influenced by the effectiveness of the euro zone's plan to bolster their bailout fund," HSBC analysts said in a note.

"If the investors deem the plan as sufficient in reducing near-term euro zone liquidity issues, we believe risk assets including gold may benefit," they added.

U.S. gold futures for June delivery were up $10.80 an ounce at $1,665.70.

Silver was up 0.8 percent at $32.46 an ounce. The gold/silver ratio, or the number of silver ounces needed to buy an ounce of gold, eased back towards 51 on Friday.

Spot platinum was up 1.2 percent at $1,641.70 an ounce and is on track for its best quarterly performance in three years, up 17.6 percent. Palladium was up 1.1 percent at $649.22 an ounce.

South Africa's government is to plough $420 million into a public-private platinum venture with Pallinghurst Resources that has ambitions to become the world's third-largest producer of the precious metal, Pallinghurst said on Thursday.

The partnership, which includes the local Bakgatla Ba Kgafela tribe, has a production target of 1.1 million ounces within the next five years. During a stop on the "Wrecking Ball" tour in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Bruce Springsteen, still spry at 62, waded into the crowd?while singing "Raise Your Hand." Part way through the song, the singer announced "I need to sit down" and took a seat, at which point an adoring fan handed him a cup of beer -- that Springsteen downed in the blink of an eye, and then jumped up and continued the song.

The link between neural stem cells and this aggressive type of cancer is a warning for the scientists to proceed with caution, with new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer?s disease, where the hope is to use neural stem cells help the loss of function of nerve regeneration, said Zhu.Over the past six years, some studies have shown that stem cells are the cells involved in a range of cancers, including glioblastoma. But the new study reveals in particular that the GBM begins in neural stem cells, which have a mutation in the p53 gene. These cells then give rise to mutants, rapid multiplication of cells of the cellular differentiation of a class called transit-amplifying progenitor cells.

In mice, neural stem cells that normally live in this segment give rise to more specialized nerve cells that migrate from the niche. The cancer can start with a single genetic mutation in the p53 gene, which makes the stem cells migrate out of the specialized niche as their offspring.

Appear June 2 in Cancer Cell, the team?s results in mice exposed to the UM for the first time: glioblastoma, the type of cancer that affects U. S. Senator Edward Kennedy is diagnosed in about 10,000 Americans each year may originate from neural stem cells located in a brain region known as the subventricular zone or SVZ.

The results found in mice add new knowledge to a sequence of images of how genes go awry to cause brain cancer. Scientists have recently discovered that some genes and cell lines of action are altered in glioblastoma. But so far scientists do not know what type of cell the cancer started, or more precisely as a lack of p53-mediated pathways is working with other mutations to transform cells in brain cancer.

The results in mice can also lead to time for an effective test for early diagnosis for glioblastoma. MU scientists show that the expression of mutated p53 protein is a marker of glioma cells at all stages of the disease.

Many cancer research has focused on the p53 gene, known as the ?guardian of the genome? because it started a wave of another gene that normally fight cancer.

First of all treatments based on these findings may benefit people, scientists will need more studies on animals to verify the results of animals in human studies.

Zhu and his project team to continue the experiments on mice to see if the function of p53 can be restored in tumor cells. They also check whether the inhibition of neural stem cells in the SVZ promise as a potential treatment. Given the plasticity of these tumor cells started, targeting a single path may not be sufficient, said Zhu.

?We found that cells with p53 mutations are very plastic. If treatment blocks a path of action, they can learn other ways to grow,? said Zhu. This explains why the yield of a glioblastoma multiforme in drug-resistant forms.

Sickle cell anemia is characterized by episodic periods of severe pain, resulting in high resource utilization in health care. Although previous studies have described the scope of this use of health services, have generally been limited to select populations of patients with sickle cell disease and therefore limited the generalization and the inability to supply estimates based on population, the authors write.

?Then we asked, mutant p53 has no role in initiation and progression of cancer, if so, we can use as a marker of brain tumor cells in the brain,? said Wang Yuan, the first author of the study and a UM graduate student in Cell and Developmental Biology. The team found that mutant p53 was detected in a minority of highly proliferative neural stem cells from p53-deficient mice two months after the birth and expansion of the mutant p53 expressing cell characteristics people behind transit-amplifying cells initiation of cancer. The evidence supports the idea that mutant p53 may be a useful marker to track glioma cells in all phases.

The finding of a specific area of ??origin could lead to treatments that can improve the median survival rate of 12 disastrous months for this type of brain cancer, said Zhu Yuan, Ph.D., lead author of the study and assistant professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Cell and Developmental Biology at the UM Medical School.

University of Michigan, scientists have discovered that a lack of key tumor suppressor gene in the brain leads to the most common form of adult brain cancer. The study, conducted on mice that mimic human cancer, paving the way for more effective treatments and the future of how to diagnose the disease early.

Radioactive medicine being tracked through rivers

A University of Delaware oceanographer has stumbled upon an unusual aid for studying local waterways: radioactive iodine. Trace amounts of the contaminant, which is used in medical treatments, are entering waterways via wastewater treatment systems and providing a new way to track where and how substances travel through rivers to the ocean.

"This is a really interesting convergence of medicine, public health and environmental science," said Christopher Sommerfield, associate professor of oceanography in UD's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment.

Sommerfield found small quantities of radioactive iodine, also called radioiodine or I-131, by accident while sampling the Delaware River, the main source of freshwater to Delaware Bay. The amounts were at low concentrations that do not pose a threat to humans or the environment, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Sommerfield measures naturally occurring radionuclides, variants of elements emitting radiation, that attach to mud particles carried along by water. The work is part of his research on how river sediments move through estuaries to the coastal ocean and influence the sea floor and coast.

When I-131 showed up in his samples, he thought it was a mistake.

"I-131 is a man-made radionuclide produced in nuclear reactors, so when we first detected it my heart skipped a beat," Sommerfield said. "However, after further research and consultation with government experts, I realized that it was I-131 waste from thyroid cancer treatments."

Therapeutic I-131 administered at hospitals enters urban sewage after thyroid cancer patients return home and excrete the medicine. Last summer the Philadelphia Water Department discovered extremely low levels of I-131 in the Schuylkill River, which serves as a drinking water source for the city, in samples collected following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

The department determined that the substance was coming from local medical treatments. Like the amounts Sommerfield found throughout the Delaware Estuary around the same time, the levels were well below the maximum accepted level set by the EPA, which periodically monitors I-131 at a limited number of sites.

Sommerfield shared his findings with Philadelphia and Delaware officials, who continue to examine the situation. He discovered that the highest I-131 concentrations were present in the highly urbanized section of the Delaware River, which receives a large amount of treated wastewater from municipalities, and that levels steadily decreased downstream to zero in Delaware Bay.

I-131 has a half-life of eight days, meaning its radioactivity decreases by half during that time period as it transforms to non-radioactive elements. Sommerfield was unable to find much information about the fate of I-131 in coastal waterways.

"There are only a few recent research papers documenting the behavior I-131 in rivers and estuaries worldwide, and nothing for Delaware," he said.

Sommerfield recently shared his experience at the international Ocean Sciences Meeting in Utah, where fellow researchers were interested in learning more about how I-131 could be used as a water and sediment tracer. Radionuclides help oceanographers study transport processes in estuaries and coastal waters, and I-131 has the potential to fill a void among natural and man-made radionuclides that are typically measured because it has a very short half-life and comes from a specific source.

"Wastewater-derived I-131 provides a tool to better understand how estuaries disperse water and suspended particles," Sommerfield said. "With further research, we expect to learn more about how sediment from the Delaware River is delivered to the estuary and fringing tidal marshlands, which require muddy sediments for nutrients and stability."
